Notes on Calico Driftwood and My Namesake's Origin

Here's some background music. I'll be going on a bit of a tangent, so you may be here a little while. ()^_^

The chapter with Levi Vs. Calico is coming up pretty soon. There are some notes on the latter that are too lengthy for me to share at the end, so I'm going to lay them out here instead.

    Status Update, April 2024 Edition

Part of my slowness in writing M.L.G.'s latest chapter is for the usual reasons: tiredness, minor depression, having other things on the mind, that sort of thing. However, in what can only be described as "whimsy", I've recently decided to complete a list of all of the intentional shout-outs and references in the story as of the most recent chapter.

    Something To Think About

I have a message to share with prospective authors. If you go into writing a story---be it as a living, or just for fun---don't automatically assume that what you're doing is wholly original.

    Tired, Running On Empty

That pretty much summarizes my mental state of the past few days. Constantly tired (half due to not getting enough sleep and half due to my walking regimen), and I can't really think of things I want to write for the story. You know you're having trouble finding things to talk about when your brain fishes for tuna, but ends up with guppies instead.

Bird Vs. Equine · 5:46pm Feb 9th, 2018

This is concerning ScrewAttack's Death Battle series, and the matchup between the Teen Titans' Raven vs. FiM's very own Twilight Sparkle set to air late this month.

For those not in the know, the focus of this video series involves two similar characters from separate series or franchises fighting to the death (often for absurd reasons). Among other rules, the battles assume that neither character knows anything about the other, and direct outside interference in a combatant's favor is not allowed; there's more, but it would take too long to list them here. A central theme of the show involves the use of research, science and mathematics--oftentimes complex--in order to determine a winner (though as you might expect, there's a lot of arguments on the Internet as to whether this is carried out well or not; people have a tendency to become extremely salty when their preferred character ends up losing).

To date, there's been two other matchups involving FiM characters. The first one, Starscream (circa 1st-Gen Transformers) vs. Rainbow Dash, ended with a crushing victory in RD's favor (how she got there doesn't fully make sense, but it's still funny regardless). The second one, Deadpool vs. Pinkie Pie, resulted in the series' only no-contest to date (this one did fully make sense, and I found it hilarious). This third one coming up makes things more even in general between both combatants, and to me it promises a close bout.

While I haven't given the arguments against Twilight's inclusion more than a cursory glance, I do know that some of them say she shouldn't be involved due to her series not being all that combat heavy (and due to a rather lackluster "I hate ponies because they're girly" mindset that leaves much to be desired). I kind of see what they're getting at, as most of what little fighting there is tends to be during the season openers/finales. That's not to say Twilight hasn't shown what she's capable of outside of those, though, and 10-to-1 all the naysayers will get plenty more than they expect.

(A bit of a side note: it doesn't matter to me who ends up winning. It's sort of like the whole thing with Anubis in Gargoyles: if you want to get as much enjoyment as possible, you can't really afford to play favorites [I said 'sort of', not 'exactly']. Liking one character more than the other is fine, but if you can't afford to set that liking aside, your own rage will end up taking potshots at your health. Trust me, I've been there.

And really? I like both characters. Twilight... well, that goes without saying. As for Raven, I tried to watch Teen Titans whenever I could when I was in college. If I rooted for one over the other, I'd be upset no matter who won.)

Last thing I want to say is this: suppose that the Death Battle series existed 12-17 years ago as of this posting. The idea of a character from My Little Pony appearing there would have been absolutely unthinkable at that time. Considering that three of FiM's central protagonists have appeared as combatants during the series' run, it says a lot about just how far MLP has come since the days when the average guy (myself included) avoided it like the plague. Think about it.

That's everything, I guess. Ciao mein, everyone.
