What kind of 'tist needs to be actually schooled in friendship?

I bet its run by Neigh Sayer as a pony-only school.

It's pretty clear from the episode that Star Swirl enrolled on a lark.

Oh what's so wrong with a little competition? Are you afraid of failing the audition?

Wait, is the episode already airing?

I hereby gift Star Swirl the Bearded with this Award of Participation for briefly appearing in this episode and not materially affecting anything one way or the other. Congratulations, you were in it.

Australia is from the future.

I'm just confused. Most of Twilight's students are children. The other school is a University. Won't they have to graduate from her school first, in order to go to the university? Actually, now that i think about it, the school was EEA accredited and hers wasn't. But why would she be worried that some of her students, that are children would go to the University? If I'm being very dumb right now I apologize.

...Oh sorry, wrong university. Same end goal, though (sorta) :rainbowwild:

4914776
His presence both heightened Twilight's emotional conflict and explained why so many ponies fell for this latest scam. If FU can be compared to Scientology (which it can), he's the John Travolta or Tom Cruise.

4914778
Watch the episode. "University" is purely a marketing gimmick.

4914763
I haven't seen any new episodes past 2015.

It's not Scientology, it's DeVry. The Friendship University of Phoenix, if you will. I can't believe the first show I've seen to call out for-profit colleges is My Little Pony, sky-high material costs, "full education in half the time" and all.

Meanwhile, Flim and Flam are in top form as always, Neighsay continues to be a magnificently hateable antagonist, and Rarity got to play detective again. So far this is my favorite episode of the season by a long shot.

Chancellor Neighsay would make a great villain in a Harry Potter movie.

Cozy Glow looks really suspicious and I hope she gets snuzzled to death by a pack of ferocious puppies.

I'm a bit disappointed that Twilight didn’t disguise herself as a nerdy schoolfilly. She could've used a spell to change her appearance or simply cast an invisibility spell on herself so she doesn't get caught.

And how did Flim and Flam copy Twilight's book? Hmmm... looks like somepony is asking for a serious snuzzling until they confess their sins.

Oh yeah, and once again more unicorn villains.

Nevertheless, this episode is kinda okay.

4914781
I did watch it I was just confused. The only problem is that it could give some children watching the show the wrong idea. Thanks for the brief explanation.

4914791
Don't you mean ITT-TECH?

I liked this episode, and it was nice to hear a song again

Why did Flam and Flam get fooled by the same scam of a 'secret' confession they more-or-less perpetuated in Viva Las Pegasus? The ending felt a bit lazy, with all the odds and ends cleared up in no time. :rainbowderp:

My favourite part was the song, and when Film (or Flam?) said "Who are you?" To Rarity even after she removed her disguise. Brutal. :facehoof:

So the scam was that Flim and Flam were charging for lessons? But, um, isn't that what universities do?

4914815
Depends. In many countries, universities are funded by taxation but are free at the point of use. But even to universities that charge tuition, FU's scheme doesn't look all that familiar. Attendance is free, but the course materials cost money. And you can neither pass the course nor take higher-level courses without paying for the course materials. This is the way cults fund themselves, not schools.

All of Equestria's schools are Hogwarts to me, this one included XD

4914815
They plagerized Twilight's work and sold it as their own for profit.

That's pretty illegal.

They also lied that the money they were getting was to improve the school and teach more ponies friendship. They instead were using it to prop up their Los Pegasus resort.

That's a form of financial fraud that would get you very sued in the real world.

A degree in Friendship. Still not as useless as a Gender Studies degree.

All schools in Equestria are only for ponies. I believe that the loophole Twilight did was something unique, that didn't happen ever before. Neighsay didn't do anything wrong yet, with the exception of being mean. He only approved the school, because it was within the rules. That's it. End of story. (yes, the rules are specieist, but that's besides the point)

4914826

They plagerized Twilight's work and sold it as their own for profit.

That's pretty illegal.

I'm not really sure here, but don't all schools have similar rules? I mean, you could just rewrite it to sound a little bit different, but that wouldn't change much and still would be a copy. Also, the FU is technically for free, just the technically-not-mandatory materials cost a craptonne of money. I don't know how Equestrian law works, but I'm sure Flim & Flam used loopholes here.

They also lied that the money they were getting was to improve the school and teach more ponies friendship. They instead were using it to prop up their Los Pegasus resort.

That's a form of financial fraud that would get you very sued in the real world.

AFAIK, real-life laws only care about how you gain the money. If they say they'll use it to run the school, whereas they're making it only for own profit, that doesn't matter. They gain the money by selling study materials, and the other party agrees by paying. Although this is dirty, it all is perfectly legal. If it were money donated by the state, it would be completely different, but that's not the case here.

I wonder how Niegh Spade would fit in at the Cook County Prison. Because all he'll hear is "He had it coming." And believe me, he will have it coming.

It was okay.

4914822
Fair enough. Although it's still not a scam. The ponies were getting exactly what they paid for, and they clearly enjoyed it. Twilight's school was falling behind because she apparently sucks at marketing.

Oh look. Racist Scumba... I mean Neighsay makes an appearance in this episode.

GREAT. :facehoof:

I know that I'll be a devil's advocate in this comment, but I understand Neighsay's fears to some extent:

  • Changelings - It wasn't so far ago when changelings invaded Canterlot, which almost resulted in claiming the ponylands. There might or might not were casualities after the event, just off-screen. Yes, changelings are reformed now, but gaining trust is difficult, moreso on the international field. Neighsay wasn't in contact with them as much as Twilight & co, so it makes sense he didn't gain any trust in changelings.
  • Dragons - Just listen to the Smoulder's story at the HW, which nicely reflects the dragons' culture. The most popular story was the one with someone strong offering a piece of its wealth to a weak, which ended in betrayal and overthrowing the strong. I can see how some can feel concerned with this.
  • Griffons - They live in a semi-anarchistic state with no leadership, no structure, and very few laws. EEA and/or Neighsay might think that griffons' general approach is "rules and laws suck" or something along those lines. Yes, it's very much off the reality. However, for ponies (like Neighsay) who don't come in contact with this, and only see the lack of the structure and laws, it's understandable for them to believe there's this mentality among griffons. And therefore it's understandable why they don't want them in Equestria.
  • Yaks - A kind possessed with being perfect, and smashing everything that isn't. Obviously exaggerated, but their brute force is obvious. They almost declared the war in "Party Pooped" because they didn't feel they were treated well enough as guests. Once again, I can see why someone wouldn't want them as their neighbour.
  • Hippogriffs - From what we've seen in "Surf and/or Turf" they're a very conservative society. Considering the events with Storm King, it makes sense. Wait, this isn't really bad... Hold on... Ok, I admit I have nothing here.

To recap, considering the circumstances, I can see how somepony could feel concerned with four of those species living in Equestria and/or attending a school in there. I've never disproved that Neighsay is racist, I only say that I can see where's he coming from and try to give you what is possibly his point of view.

The episode was... fine, I guess? I don't really like Flim and Flam, or their songs, but seeing Starswirl again was great, as well as hearing Maurice LaMarche's voice once again.
However, this episode once again confirms to me that Twilight is really shitty princess. Or at least, a very mediocre one.
One would have thought, that Celestia (or at least Cadance) would teach Twilight a little bit about "princessing". How to wear a "mask", how to be calm and collected, how to radiate authority and commanding presence, how to manipulate the audience, etc. Like, she could've easily used Neightsay's xenophobia and racism against him and expose him in front of all those ponies, instead of just standing there. Or not be that easily swindled by Flim and Flam both during the musical number, and when caught in their office sneaking.
The filly really needs to go read some Machiavelli.

4914840

AFAIK, real-life laws only care about how you gain the money. If they say they'll use it to run the school, whereas they're making it only for own profit, that doesn't matter.

If we're talking about investors' money and not customers' money, then no, that's not true at all. It is a major breach of fiduciary duty to commingle your corporation's assets with your own, or with those of another corporation you own. As Spamotron says, that can get you sued right quick. The question is whether FU students are more like investors or more like customers. Twilight is the chancery judge here, and she seems to believe they are more like investors.

4914849
This goes back to the investor/customer distinction. If the FU students are customers, then they are merely paying for a product. If they are investors, they expect the money to go towards improving FU. But even if they are customers, FU's exploitative monetization model and reliance on contracts of adhesion are plenty to get ethically agitated over. Fuck the ideology of caveat emptor. We can be a little more inquisitive than that.

4914779
If Discord had wanted to get back at Twilight for not being invited to her school's ceremonies, he should have instead opened his own Looniversity right next to her school.

4914869
...Or just given her to Elmyra to play with. :scootangel:

(Just kidding. That would be a fate worse than death) :twilightoops:

What the heck is up with this episode 'schedule'? :twilightoops:

4914789
Well you are missing out on some of the best episode ever. Season 6 episode 8 is the best Hearth Warming Eve episode ever. So is 16, and the finale. Season 7 is even better with a season premiere that focuses on Celestia for crying out loud. 7 years fans wanted that episode and to top that off a Celestia and Luna episode that is insane! The return of Starswirl is just the cherry on top. Go catch up. Benge watch it! And yes Equestria Girls is cannon so Legend of Everfree after season 6. Dance Magic, Movie Magic, Mirror Magic after season 7 episode 12. Equestria Girls summer time shorts after season 7 and better together series which includes forgotten friendship and season 8 to episode 13 and then roller coaster of friendship

4914859
WhileI tried to understand your point, the whole "see things from his point of view" thing kind of falls flat when you remember the fact that despite all of this these various races are still trying to give peace a chance by enrolling their students at her school.

And let's not forget the fact that Neighsay's approving a School run by two known Con Artists! Did even bother doing a background check on these two!? And he doesn't consider how bad it'll look on the EEA's Public Image when it turns out that their most authoritative member approved it out of petty spite???

honestly was sorta shocked they went the typical flim and flam are con artist routes I was expecting chancellor neighsayer's blatant bigotry to figure into the resolution ie flim and flam are legitimate but in order to get the eea accreditation they had to bar non ponies and seeing the student 6 sad would break the university. that said I knew neighsayer would be behind the rival school when I saw the synopis. also they seem to be confirming my theory that the pink foal who's name escapes me is probably neighsayer's daughter.

4914865
Their business model was based on voluntary transactions, and the ponies know what they're getting, so I don't see how it's exploitive to the extent that warranted a shutdown. You could say the scam was that they were using the money for their resort, but that doesn't make any sense. If FU really is making them that much money, the smart decision would be to continue the investment while using the surplus for other businesses. Improving the university could only mean more revenue, so the FU would have continued just fine if it weren't for Twilight.

Maybe cartoon logic dictates it would fail, or Flim and Flam are terrible businessponies who'd abandon FU for short-term gain, but realistically it was a legitimate business that was helping other ponies and making them money. That's a win-win situation.

Friendship University.

It’s the least subtle “F U” we’re ever going to see other than student debt.

4914865

Good points there! I have to admit I see the students in the episode more as customers, who pay unreasonably high price to get a product. (studying materials, which)

You say they invest cash in hope, it'll return to them as the graduation. (Do I get it right?) However, this to me feels as buying cooker - it'll pay off just by using the cooker as you're supposed to, but if there is "no refunds" somewhere in the deal, then you should reconsider your risk.

4914876

While I tried to understand your point, the whole "see things from his point of view" thing kind of falls flat when you remember the fact that despite all of this these various races are still trying to give peace a chance by enrolling their students at her school.

I'm confident to say that this "the other kinds sending their student into the school" was Twilight's idea. (I mean, it's unlikely that five kingdoms just thought: "Princess created a school, let's send a student there.")

And let's not forget the fact that Neighsay's approving a School run by two known Con Artists!

As you say, they probably ignored the background check, which should've been considered. Once again, Flim & Flam use a lot of loopholes, which might made them get away with it. This is just a theory, though - I gotta give it to you, this is a great point.

4914897

I'm confident to say that this "the other kinds sending their student into the school" was Twilight's idea. (I mean, it's unlikely that five kingdoms just thought: "Princess created a school, let's send a student there.")

Well obviously it was her idea, I'm just saying that the other races get points for actually considering and eventually agreeing to send one of their own there, the wouldn't have done that if they weren't willing to at least try strengthening the bonds between their own kingdoms and Equestria.

4914899

Misunderstood that at first! It's obviously too little to swing somepony from not-trusting-at-all to they-are-all-fine-I-do-not-know-why-was-I-afraid, in that matter. Still, that's a good point, I have to admit.

4914896
:facehoof: Way to set a new trend...

4914872
You could ask that about the order of episode production.

4914779 Kudos for the reference

I am just wondering if Neigh-say's reputation will be hurt because he endorsed a school that turned out to be a con and was using the guidebook for a school he tried to close.
EDIT: accidently deleated this.
