Editing and Writing Commissions! · 9:37pm Aug 16th, 2018

TL;DR I'm officially opening up for both editing-for-hire and also story commissions. See below for details.

Editing

So, earlier this year, I decided that editing was both 1) something I enjoyed doing and 2) something that I do, I think, really rather well. I even wrote an article about editing with some advice and also my general philosophy on the whole thing.

Soon after that, I decided I wanted to start hiring my editing skills out. The people who I spend the most time and energy working with these days, as some of you will have likely noticed, are Aragon and MrNumbers, but I've been doing random pre-reading/proof-reading/editing gigs for nearly as long as I've been on the site, period, and I have a bunch of them collected in this here bookshelf for you to peruse at.

My rates are very flexible, because I'd like to work for a price that the client and I will both feel comfortable with, but as they stand they are as follows:

--$10 per 1000 words for a complete edit. This means that I will be fixing your technical errors, improving your prose, giving feedback on your scenes/chapters and overall structure, helping you bounce ideas if need be, etc. I will work with you to try and make your story as strong as it can be.

--$6 per 1000 words for either proof-reading or pre-reading.
For those unfamiliar: pre-reading is the larger-scale, general opinion of how your story is unfolding. I'll look over your scenes and chapters and tell you what I think of your story as it unfolds, as well as potential improvements that can be made. Proof-reading, on the other hand, is entirely about the words on the page: I'll fix your grammar, improve sentences, paragraphing, cut unnecessary wordage, etc.

While I have done some fairly significant work already – including helping someone edit, rewrite, and brainstorm ideas for an entire original novel – this is also a fairly laid-back thing that I'm still getting used to. I do hope you guys might consider me next time you want a good, fast editor.

Aragon: look like
here's why you're a good editor, right
A) you know your shit
like that's extremely important is the thing
'cause you actually read a lot and know about literature and about themes and whitespace and rhythm and character and voicing and pacing and storytelling and prose and writing in general
but also B) you don't shy away from pointing out what works or what doesn't, and at least to me that's extremely important
'OI WHY THE SHIT IS RARITY TALKING LIKE THIS HERE'
'THIS IS SHIT'
'CHANGE IT'
which is what HAS to be said
so really just copypaste this last thing in the blog itself

Pearple Prose: yeah i was gonna do exactly that the moment you started
cheers duder

Story Commissions

I'll be frank: I enjoy writing with prompts, and I enjoy writing with an added incentive. A lot of my stories, including Sugar and Spice which I am very fond of, are the offspring of various contests and such that I've entered.

So, to that end, I'm now opening up for story commissions at $15 per 1000 words. I'm pretty open to trying out new things, and I think I'm generally okay with writing pretty much any genre, although I'm particularly fond of Romance, Slice of Life, and – recently – Comedies. However, I have a strong dislike for HiE and the various flavours thereof, but if I'm provided with an enjoyable idea I have been known to submit to the urge. I don't tend to enjoy writing "fluff", either, but that's more of a 'I try it and it ends up becoming really dark'. I need drama, dammit!

Also, No Clop. I'm more than willing to write mature stories with sex and violence and what-have-you in them, but I'm not at all interested in writing porn.

As a personal request, also: ideas that aren't too specific would be appreciated. I'd like to have room to add my own twist to ideas, if that's possible.

Anyway, yeah, that's basically everything I can think of that warrants mentioning. Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments below. If you'd like to PM me on Discord, my username is Pearogative#2869.

I can attest to Pearple's incredible editing skills. His feedback on my stories has allowed me to grow tremendously as a writer, and his ability to provide simple and complex advice, as well as high and low-level feedback ensured that I was never overwhelmed while I learned in the ins-and-outs of writing. He has a knack for identifying the fundamental issues in my writing and presenting it in such a way that we can come up with a way to correct those issues together.

I owe most of my improvement in the past year to the help he's graciously provided me, and I can't recommend or thank him enough.
