Oh, fuck me. :raritydespair: · 10:41am Sep 13th, 2018

Anyway, for those of you not aware, EU is killing net-neutrality via vile bunches of garbage masquerading as law called Proposition 11 & Proposition 13.

Basically, a whole bunch of filters to strip the Internet of each and every little copy-righted material shared without consent, because the sad, tiny megacorps only have one or two money-bins each to roll around in. :twilightangry2:

Stuff like, you know, uploading fan-fiction featuring My Little Pony characters.

From EU member nations such as, just for example, Sweden.

...Not gonna lie people, I'm worried.

This shit-storm hits in December, with the final stamps hitting paper in January.

I... really, really don't writing this. Doubly so soon after that big proclamation how I've got plans for all my stories, and hope to continue writing here for many years to come you guys gave such a glowing response to, but...

Ugh, if there's any of my stories—or any other from European authors for that matter—you'd like to save, please, do so now. I just don't know what this horror-show is going to do to my writing, both already online and going forwards.

I'm genuinely sorry for needing to do such a heavy follow up to one of the most positive things I've written all year. Fuck you EU, fuck you. :raritydespair:

You'll be fiiine. Hosters will just move to Russia or the US, I also doubt fanfic will be affected.

I highly doubt fanfiction will be affected as it keeps interest alive in fandoms and thus generates more money. There are a few isolated cases of specific properties attempting to retain control of how their property is represented through fanfiction and fanart (Dragonriders of Pern for fanfiction and Pokemon for naughty doujinshi come to mind), but look to Japan and their doujinshi to get an idea of where it might go even in a stricter environment.

To those saying fanfic won't be affected and making logic based arguments about why that would be shooting themselves in the foot, I'd say 'never underestimate the stupidity or greed of government or corporations that think they have a monopoly.'

However, presumably any fanfic sites in the EU can simply host elsewhere. Which means all the EU countries can do is have your ISPs block those foreign sites for noncompliance. Since these new laws don't seem to make VPNs illegal it should be easy enough to get around at least.

Unless the government starts outright installing copyright spyware on your computer or blocks access to all VPNs.

I do hope I'm overreacting (if hoping even more this thing gets buried in a shallow grave and stays there), I genuinely do...

BUT the focus of this thing is forcing servicing providers to use these algorithms, to check EVERYTHING being uploaded. At the very least this is going to turn everything into youtube in miniature.

Oh, did that touching family photo of Little Susan dying surrounded by loved ones also contain her Dora The Explorer© plush? Sorry, but her likeness IS being misused there, and this is your third strike. We're 'sorry' that this is going to destroy any chance you have of paying off your ex-daughters hospital bills, but we simply must remove such despicable missuse of Dora The Explorer© off the internet.

...

Again, I really, really hope that won't come to pass... but let's be honest: the big corporations have not earned one iota of trust with this type of stuff, and I can't help but feel really worried.

Giving that you only mentioned European authors, I'm hoping this isn't the case, but would this also stop the viewing of fanfiction in EU countries?

Sadly don't know right now—even the legal expert right now are criticising these laws for being vague and fuzzy on how they'll actually work.

But, well, I doubt I'm the only one not really feeling like giving the copyright creeps any benefit of the doubt after these last few years. :applecry:
