Knighty must be confused right now. (NOW WITH BONUS MINECRAFT!) · 3:42am Nov 4th, 2018
...after a long period of waiting for my user page to load...
Yes, I have gotten my 166MHz, 384-Megabyte, mid-1990s Windows 2000 PC loading Fimfiction while running off of an 8 gig SD card as its hard drive.
It only took a cumulative 2-3 days of research, work, pain, and troubleshooting to get it this far.
Now to get back to trying to get video playback working.
EDIT: FreeDOS has less overhead and handles video playback much better. I've hopped on to the ultimate test of strength...
Minecraft.
It makes it to the 1.5.2 title screen, but I'm not sure if it can generate worlds or not. It seemed to freeze at "building terrain", so I closed it and went all the way back to Infdev.
I forgot to take a pic of the title screen, but Infdev managed to generate a world! Though, with this hardware, it wasn't even running at frames per second. It was running at about 15 seconds per frame.
Either way, I'm satisfied with my efforts. I don't think I can really push this system any further beyond this point. Java 1.6 is the last version to support the CPU, DirectX 9.0c is the highest version I can get, and 166MHz is the absolute hard limit on CPU frequency that the board can handle without overloading its dinky little VRM system.
Though, I noticed that there's a newer variant of the board that appears to have a much beefier VRM and additional multipler selections. They're pretty rare though, but I know of them from a few ebay listings I came across and a pdf of its installation manual.
MORE EDITS: 1.5.2 always locks up on the title screen or loading world screen. It'll be better to play a previous version, I guess.
I'm gonna see if Classic can get a playboy framerate.
