No, that title isn’t a typo.

It is, in fact, the title of the story that I commissioned from the wonderful anonpencil!

I don’t know anything about it; it may not even be live yet when this blog is published. And I probably can’t link it, ‘cause anonpencil asked if it was okay if it was mature, so I’m expecting it to come with a shiny red M tag. But y’all should go read it (assuming you’re old enough and want to go down that particular rabbit hole)! It’s got pandas in it!*

It is live, it is mature, and it does have pandas in it, in ways no one probably wants there to be.
Enjoy, and you're brilliant for commissioning this!

Dan

Pandas are cute, but they're reluctant to breed and reliant on a single food source. Humans need to learn to let them go, since they clearly aren't meant to survive as a species, and trying to artificially keep the species as it is now alive is a waste. Maybe research into modifying their behavior or crossbreeding in better survival traits would be beneficial. And cutting back deforestation couldn't hurt of course. Wrecking their habitat does kind of make them humanity's responsibility. There's no such thing as too much genetic diversity, so long as overspecialization doesn't lead to stagnation. (I'm ambivalent towards the brouhaha over that Doctor in China)

Oh, so you’re the one responsible for inflicting degenerate bear puns upon us. Thanks!

A “Thank you” to you too.

Mature or not, I like how the trigger warnings on that story are probably the least offensive of any of anonpencil's works. :moustache:

I’d have to bet that encroaching on their habitat is likely one of the biggest obstacles to panda survival as a species. I think that there are lots of other animals that rely on one specific food source as well. Monarch butterflies really like milkweed, and there isn’t as much of that as there used to be, due to changing farming practices and herbicides.

Evolutionary, reliance on one food source probably isn’t a good thing, since of course that food source could get scarce and then it’s no more for that species, unless it can manage to eat something else.

I do wonder if they’re as reluctant to breed in the wild as they are in captivity? I ought to do more panda research.

Having read it, I concur very much with this statement.

You’re welcome!

I’ve never looked, but that’s alarming if true.

Also, I totally wouldn’t be surprised if it’s true.
