Believe it or not, I actually got some chores done today.

And that's saying something, because if Diablo IV was this good at any point last year, it would have definitely been near the top of my Best Games of 2023. You know, instead of being omitted entirely.

So let's just say that Armored Core VI absolutely just got smacked out of the running for Best Yesteryear Game.

    Updates and Such

Well, as a thunderstorm rolls overhead (and hopefully doesn't knock power out), I thought I'd offer some updates on what I've been up to.

Long story short, I'm pretty much in gaming overload at the moment.

Best Games of 2018 · 11:09am Dec 11th, 2018

Well, I'm definitely not getting any other 2018 games this year, and I'm ready to rank the top five that I did buy. Here we go!

5. Spyro Reignited Trilogy

I grew up as a Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64 kid; so I missed out on all of the PS1 classics that put them Sony on the map. Out of the two remastered trilogies I bought this year, I've been leaning more towards this one. Collect-a-thons when done right are hard to beat in my book.

4. Tetris Effect

The world's best and most well known puzzle game isn't anything new. What is new, however, is the stunning and surreal backdrops and special effects that come alongside it in Tetris Effect. They are even more amazing with a PSVR headset, where it's not just behind the tetrimino board, but all around you. It's the ultimate love letter to Tetris.

3. Subnautica

Developer politics aside, this underwater survival game was the best thing to come out of early access this year. Anyone with thalassophobia (fear of the ocean) probably shouldn't try this harrowing underwater experience that has you searching for food and supplies, slowly working your way deeper into an ancient volcanic crater.

2. Red Dead Redemption 2

I cannot overstate how close these last two games are. They are both must-have experiences for any well-rounded open world gamer.

The highly anticipated prequel to 2010's Red Dead Redemption turns everything up to 11 as you hunt, rob, and fight to survive in an outlaw gang in the dying throes of the Old American West.

The vistas are stunning, the gunfights are intense, and the game is... Rather massive, as this is one of two games in this list that I have not completed yet; as of this writing, I'm in the second part of the Epilogue.

Game of the Year 2018:
Spider-Man

Inching one out above the open world western is the absolute best iteration of the NYC wallcrawler the gaming community has ever seen.

Featuring a nearly 1:1 replica of Manhattan, a rousing musical score, and a gripping story with a conclusion that brought me to tears.

This is Spider-Man as you've never played him before.

Did you not play God of War or did it just not make your list?

Haven't played it yet. It's on my 2019 shortlist.

Damn son, you missin' out. Might want to amend this list once you've finally played it :p

I don't blame you. 2018 is choked full of games its impossible to play them all in a calendar year. Heck even I ended up playing Yakuza 0 & Nier Automata from 2017 this year. They would've def made my 2017 top 10 games list then

Ditto on Number 1. But if there's one game I highly recommend you check out, one that truly deserves to be among the best of 2018, it's Detroit: Become Human. It sets a new gold standard for choices and morality in video games, because what you say and do (or don't do) can affect the game's story.

Why not smash ultimate that is the most ambitious crossover game plus joker from persona 5 is gonna be DLC

It's his list, so it's his top 5. That, and he doesn't own a Switch, so he's not getting Smash Ultimate anyway. Personally, I'm not getting Smash Ultimate either. I'm not really into multiplayer games, so as great as I'm sure the game is, I don't think it has very much to offer me.
