... I don't want to sound rude, but aren't they literally forced to stay in a barn/stable by an innkeeper who doesn't care about them? Also, my rememberance of the bible is pretty sketchy, but don't Mary and Joseph head to Bethlehem, due to a census that was declared by the king? Which required them to go their hometown, aka the place they were born? How does that make them immigrants?
Would appreciate someone clearing up my confusion.

You are correct. They weren't refugees or immigrants in any sense of the word, but were simply travelers. However, as prophesied, Jesus Christ arrived in the humblest of circumstances. He was rejected by man, but accepted by the humble and meek, which is why angels appeared to poor shepherds and not to the rulers and the powerful as the world might expect such a magnificent pronouncement to come to.
So, while the sentiment that Christ was a refugee who was taken in is perhaps a nice one, it is not accurate. However, we should all make room in our hearts for Him and acknowledge Him as the only way to be truly happy in this life and receive exaltation in the life to come.
