Still the best episode · 2:17pm Feb 15th, 2019
My little one is off school today, and we just re-watched “Luna Eclipsed.”
I still can’t comprehend how brilliant that episode is. Without a doubt, Luna is my favorite character, in no small part because of her backstory and her struggle against her inner darkness. Her complexity. I’ve tried to address that in two of my stories, and I’m 55k words into a Luna-centric novel that is some of the most fun I’ve ever had writing.
But even more than the brilliant script for “Luna Eclipsed,” I think Tabitha St. Germain’s voicing of Luna is what sells the episode. You can hear the brittle, imperious mien over top of the fillyish terror and anxiety:
Ah. The ringleader of the frightened children. Hast thou come to make peace?
You can hear the tears hidden behind her voice.
Yes, beyond a shadow of a doubt, Luna is best pony, and “Luna Eclipsed” is best episode. (Not that I don’t have massive 💗 for Starlight and Sunset as well.)
There are many, many good episodes. Episodes with infinite rewatch value include: “Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?”; “No Second Prances”; “The Parent Map”; “The Sounds of Silence”; and especially “A Royal Problem.” But, even so, in my mind, “Luna Eclipsed” is the best of the series.
I’ve preordered the Nightmare Knights final omnibus from Amazon and I’m looking forward to that. (I have not read the individual issues.)
Thoughts?
❤❤❤❤❤
Luna deserves some more episodes. She's a really awesome and deep character that I wouldn't have expected out of a children's show. She definitely needs more merch, too.

OMFG I know right? I would crush Amazon if they had more Luna merch! There’s a Trixie Funko on my Synology RAID at work but only because the Luna was so expensive.

Yes. I agree with you that Luna needs more attention.
Well..... I'm somewhat a fan of this episode.
It's just.... my only problem is that Princess Luna's S2 Onwards Design debuted in this episode. I don't hate Princess Luna's S2 Onwards Design though. It's fine in my opinion. It's just.... I can't see Princess Luna like that though. :(
Hence why.... the only design of Princess Luna that I prefer is...... her old S1 Design.

That would have been epic.

Am I not wrong though that I prefer Princess Luna in her S1 Design more so than her Current S2 Onwards Design? :(
5019486
Yes, I agree, I like the early design better.

Call me crazy and insane.... but I wish her S1 Design was kept though.... ^^;
Am I not wrong for that? ^^;

Agreed. Her S1 design directly resulted in my “A Day in Canterlot Juvenile Court “ fic.

I first watched Friendship is Magic sometime in 2013, when my then-toddler sister was watching the show, and I decided to join it out of boredom. The episode was "Luna Eclipsed". And I was hooked on it, from the moment this loud, boisterous, but surprisingly vulnerable princess showed up and loudly declared her intent to appeal to her subjects after so long, and of course, there's Twilight reaching out to her out of kindness and helping her out.
While "Amending Fences" remains my favourite episode from the show, "Luna Eclipsed" is a very close second. They might as well be sharing the top spot, it varies with my mood.
Anyways, what's more to say that you haven't covered Princess Luna was kind, adorable, she was haughty, relatable and funny, and she has always been, and will continue to be, my favourite character ever in Friendship is Magic, hell, maybe all of fiction if I'm counting the many, many fanfics that just get her right.
The show has changed through the years, some good, some bad. But to me, when I think of FiM, I'll always remember the Princess of the Night exclaiming "Haha! The fun has been doubled!"
Anyways, describing more why she's just so, so good will take all day from me so I'll leave it there, heh.
Here's to Best Princess!
