Bad Book Review 01 (Not much of a Chapter 01) · 7:41pm Jul 14th, 2019
Today's the day. Today I start my book review for you. Last time, I gave a teaser about it, but didn't really tell you what it was about. Well, now you can find out.
To begin, the book does not have a singular title. It's not like The Chronicles of Narnia where the series has its own name, nor is it like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where the series as a whole is named after the first book. The closest possibility is that the author -- who we will now introduce as one Miss Lia Scott Price -- decided to just have the book be named the three story titles combined: The Guardian, Revenant, and Dominion. Except, that doesn't sound like a singular title to me.
So I'm going to call it The Killer Angel series.
Because that's what we are dealing with.
Killer angels.
More specifically, with our first story, The Guardian, we are dealing what we are told is "a guardian angel serial killer." That's right, the first story is about a guardian angel who kills people. More specifically, he kills the people who pray to him.
This actually leaves me with a question to the more religious out there. How many of you actually pray specifically to guardian angels? I'm familiar with people praying to God, Jesus, and Saints, but have never heard of praying to angels in general, or guardian angels specifically.
So that's the broad stroke of the story. More details will be filled in as they are brought up in the story.
Unfortunately, there will not be any for this post.
In my last post here, when I was teasing this review, I mentioned that I might have to come up with a way to break this apart from doing each chapter. Well, two things made me bring that up, which I noticed when I was looking over the book while planning this review. One, is that it doesn't have proper chapter breaks. When one chapter ends, the next one doesn't start on the next page, or the next right sided page, as many books normally do. Instead, the next "chapter" starts almost immediately after the previous ends, separated only by a number set between the last paragraph of one, and the first of the other.
So you get:
Last line of one chapter.
#
First line of new chapter.
The second was simply how short the first chapter was. It's only five paragraphs, with the last one being a single sentence.
Behold our story.
Fortunately, it doesn't look like the rest of the chapters are like this. As such, it can still be separated by them.
As for the chapter itself, it's more set-up than anything. Not quite a prologue, although that would be closer. More like something that might be set up at the start of a chapter and in a separate font before starting on the chapter proper. Kind of like how some stories have a famous quote that is relevant to the chapter before the chapter starts. It's just setting up the rest of the story, although with a bit of a biblical tone to the writing. It doesn't really tell us anything much.
So, that's kind of it for now. Not much from the book to talk about at this point. Fortunately, the second chapter looks to be a proper one. There will be things that happen in it which I will actually be able to talk about and that will move the story forward.
Until next time,
Ink Hoof.
Huh. I've seen this kind of layout before, but certainly not this concept. This could either be very interesting or very stupid, and I doubt you'd be dissecting it chapter by chapter if it were a good read. This should be one to remember. Or at least regret.
