Battery Safety PSA! · 9:32pm Apr 13th, 2020

Safety PSA: when you discard old rectangular 9-volt batteries, cover the contacts with tape so you don’t almost accidentally burn your house down, as my mom found out last night.

Well that ain't lookin' good.

make sure you cover all sides of the contacts with tape too. otherwise they might explode in the garbage truck or set it on fire.

Holy shit. At least it wasn't worse. I bet the house stinks now.

Also remember to turn off the propane tank for your bbq grille EVERY time you're done using it.

For years, I had a pile of probably about 100 of them on my desk at work, with the expectation that someday I'd take them outside and chain them all together. I'd only put maybe 12 together before, and it made a weak spark. But then a few months ago, the safety guys caught me with them and made me go put them in the hazmat disposal bin.

Oddly enough, they were okay with me collecting dead batteries to put in the hazmat/recycling area, as long as they weren't sitting loose on my desk. They wanted me to use a plastic bucket, which now seems like wouldn't be much of an improvement.

A 9-volt, a drop of lighter fluid, and steel wool, give you a firestarter that can't be beat. Thermite ftw.

Propane?
What if I like using Butane and Butane accessories?

Oh, dear; glad it looks like the damage was pretty limited (Well, relative to what it could have been.).

Will have to try that sometime.

Sneak into the hazmat/recycling area and steal all the old batteries!
