Fic Recommendations - 27/03/21 · 4:26am Mar 27th, 2021
It's me it's the guy who writes pseudointellectual pretentious stuff,
Anyway, I don't care whether you want more fic recommendations, you'll get them and you'll like it >:(
I've talked about my wonderful friend themoontonite's work before, and how she writes some of the most beautiful prose I've ever seen. This piece is some ways the quintessential showpiece of her work. It's flowerly, wonderfully purple, stunningly poetic and absolutely, positively gay. I can't think of a more fitting reference point for her work than that. Her romance fiction is fiction that aches, read this to find out exactly what I mean.
My man Flash is always gonna write the kinda horror that you need to have read, like, yesterday. Preternatural is no exception, but the reason I'm reccing this one in particular is that it just really does it for me. This is the kind of work I love to see. It's haunting in a very literal sense. It feels haunted, it deals with haunted spaces and people and memories. It balances themes of the experiences that create us and the striding we all tend to do with the fantastical. Our past, just as our future, is there to be mythologised, and Flash understands that. Preternatural understands that, at least that was my interpretation. Go read and see how you interpret it, you won't regret it.
I recently described Mel's work as stories that breathe romance, in so many more ways than 'just' being a conventional romance. Mel's works feel like fairytales, like some grand old tome you've discovered in some magical lost library. Stories like this display why, by taking what could easily be a fairly placing interaction between two characters and making it romantic and tinged with the perfect amount of drama.
The exact phrase I used those few weeks ago was 'Why have characters walk somewhere, when they could dance along the way?'. Mel exemplifies this, and I think this among many other pieces displays why.
Mushroom is one of fimfic's most talented writers and this should explain a lot better than my words can about why that is. What I particularly love about their work is how they tackle many concepts you don't see too much as the central theme of a story and do it amazingly. This particular piece is about seasonal depression and mushroom does a stunning job at taking this theme which is so often a secondary plot point in fiction and making it the focus without breaking a sweat. Before now, I've read a truly terrifying horror piece from mush about migraines and you better believe they pulled it off to perfection. You owe it to yourself to read their work.
Shas is an incredibly talented author. Her work is always amazingly well executed, and this piece is no exception. She inverts a prompt here in an creative and original way, and produces a genuinely unsettling piece of a writing in the process. Double Diamond's narration is nauseating and repulsive in a way that never lets the audience look away for a moment. The pacing, the plot, all works in conjunction to make something very, very heavy in a great way. I would heed the tags carefully before diving in, but if you've got the stomach then dive in you should.

Ruby's work is something I would describe as unflinching, and I think Incinerate is a great example of this. She has a way of presenting information to the audience in a wonderfully abrupt way. You will be reading a passage and she can legitimately catch you totally off-guard with the insertion of some very visceral prose. I think that violence and gore in pieces of writing can get a bad wrap, and yeah I'm not the biggest fan of when a story relies on those things as a crutch. But Ruby is an author who shows that passages of sudden, very shocking prose presented just like any other part of the piece can reignite the thrill of literary violence. And while this is far from all Ruby is doing in her pieces, it's definitely one of my favourite things she does. The tags should be very closely heeded, but as with Shas' piece, if you've got the stomach then dive in.
This is a stunning piece from Rice. Despite the unconventional pairing, this story is an intoxicating romance throughout. Rice takes the brilliant decision to focus on the conveyance of physical sensation. This is a story that you can really feel. Her further decision to extent the physicality to the plot in the form of a horse form of palmistry was inspired, and she pulls it all off without missing a beat. Simply put, this is an excellent and heady piece of romantic fiction that never lets go of the audience for a moment. I loved it front to back and I think you will too.
This is a great horror piece by Silent that makes use of the diary entry format which can so often be the scourge of many pieces. Silent instead uses the structure to great effect, crafting a feeling of creeping dread that can quickly overwhelm the audience in the best way. It's a story that feels desperate and pained, and all of this is blended into the writing to make it all feel totally effortless. Really amazing stuff from Silent here to say the least.
Ah yes, another entry in the ongoing Fiddledust collection we're hoping will one day overtake all of fimfiction. This fic is so charming and good natured. Krazy deals incredibly well with creating a sweet, engaging SoL which delves into the characters of two characters who, in the fandom, don't often get their fair share of coverage. It's a story which is very easy to get on board with owed to the great writing, wonderful plot and endearing character interaction
Zontan stories are pieces of fiction for and by people who just love storytelling. I think that, while it seems obvious, this can sometimes be an overlooked part of creating a fic. Zontan understands better than most what makes a story tick, and all of the facets of his work are tuned to make this happen with great results. I love his horrors because of the unique spin his writing style gives to darker pieces. This is no exception. This is a story where the horror comes from Zontan's storytelling viscerally transporting you through imagery and empathy both into Twilight's shoes. And, though it's a place in this case where no one would want to be, I think you owe it to yourself to let Zon take you there for a little while
Red's Cadance contest entry is stunning even for him, which is saying a great deal. Among all his body of work, this is by far one of his best achievements. The structure is deftly executed, the themes imparted with an amazingly skilful balance of subtlety and openness. It's a story that manages to be about a character, about an emotion, about a universal experience, about all of us. It does all these things at the same time without breaking a sweat and it was written in an hour. This is not something you can afford to miss
Of course, last, but far from least is the wonderful wishcometrue. This is such an adorable piece of writing I can barely stand it. This is a showpiece for a story that didn't feel like there was any need to decide between being light and fluffy, and being artful. Indeed, there is no reason for this to ever not be the case, it just so happens Wish is a master at this kind of writing and it is on full display here. Through the passages of adorable character interaction and charming prose, there's so much happening between the lines to reinforce the plot and the characterisation. It's no less than I'd ever expect from a wish story, and yet she exceeds my expectations time and time again. This is a wonderful romance and you should all make time in your day for it.
But I do like it. :)
Yeah well I am rubber and you are glue, seer
I haven't read nearly enough of the fics on this list!! Looks like I've got my work cut out for me this week. Of course, I'll have to add one of your pieces onto the list, too... I'm thinking Onkalo
