My Little Mothling Series: Hearth concept art · 11:21pm Apr 26th, 2021
Here's the final design for Hearth's new Mothling form, which will be introduced in chapter 3 of The Blind Sun. Not much of a spoiler given this is how she'll look from that point on.
Trivia
- She doesn't have a horn because I ran out of room on the page when drawing, so the little hearts on the end of her antennae will light up when she does magic instead.
- I tried giving her a tail, but it didn't look right. I tried a lion tail, a serpentine-like tail, to a fluffy dog-like one. And then decided she looked better without one.
- When I started drawing her head, I gave her a hood and mask, similar to the Grimmsteeds. However it came off as too mysterious, which didn't fit her character. so I changed it to what you see here.
- The reason why she's super fluffy and cute? She's a former Kindler and spent a lot of her time just being the "team mum" so to speak. Mothling's retain elements of their former roles prior to metamorphosis. Hearth looks soft, fluffy, and approachable, perfect for a 'ling that spent who knows how long looking after children and more sensitive individuals.
- She originally had a heart shaped plate of chitin on her chest, but I couldn't get it to look right and it ruined the whole "walking ball of fluff" look I wanted to give her, so I stuck with the fluffy hearts on the end of her antennae.
- Her lop ears were a last minute addition, but it added to the softer look, so I kept it.
- Hearth is now as large as Chrysalis. Yes, the walking ball of fluff is the same height as Queen Chrysalis.
- Her wings were inspired by Grimm's cape, and Stage 4 Grimmchild from Hollow Knight. When she doesn't use them, they turn into white tendrils akin to the Radiance's wings that rest on her back like a cape.
- Said wings are made of soul infused membrane. Magic wings! That's also why they're white as opposed to grey or black.
If it wasn't obvious, I cannot draw anything but the most basic of poses, but I did my best.
