Random Idea #79: Formula Tank · 4:24am Feb 27th, 2022
Formula Tank:
V1: An alternative FSAE school club/project
Since building a complete, full size tank is way harder and more expensive than a small single seater, the competition only requires ¼ scale vehicles with R/C and VR controls. The Formula tests for Gunnery, Survivability, Mobility, and Endurance/Reliability, with stipulations on what era of tech you have access to (30s, 40s, etc). This also makes massive assumptions about the level of robotics in GuP land, on par with the robots in Real Steel.
Gunnery: Several moving and non-moving targets with a specified amount of armor, with varying amounts of armor depending on which side is facing you. Be judged on time it takes to eliminate targets.
Survivability: Get into a crossfire(?) of tanks and AT guns with different characteristics, and have to survive, dodge, or eliminate the targets while getting to a checkpoint.
Mobility/Reliability: It’s a race. Either time trial or track to track on a course reminiscent of FSAE Baja. Includes areas that must be taken in reverse.
Endurance/Reliability: All of the above but for an hour straight. Distance, targets destroyed. If parts fail, either give up or repair it, like a Rally Raid.
V2: Crossout inspired game, also called Formula Tank?
Played more like an RPG (think Choro Q)
Start off with a list of cheap tanks, with most components being customizable like Sprocket, if simpler. Turret/Gun, Engine, suspension, track, steering, a range of armor addition/subtraction.
Smaller turrets are ok, but cannot fit a turret larger than the hull’s turret ring. Gun cannot be bigger than the space allotted for in the turret. Engine has a box size that must fit in the engine bay. Transmission size and suspension size eats into crew space (bogie vs torsion vs christie, etc). Armor thickness eats into crew space. All hulls can be TD’d two ways, either with a large, open topped turret, or hull mounting the gun. Needs to take from an existing TD turret or superstructure if placed on top of the hull, needs space for the driver if placed directly on the front glacis.
