Follow up, one month later: my boss ended up with COVID, I got sick two days later (two negative results on the rapid tests, so possibly not COVID), and my boss ended up missing two weeks of work, so his boss flew out from Edmonton to help out and start training the new woman who started the day after all of this started...
Things are back to normal now though. My boss is better. New woman is working out well. And I'm still employed, so that's what matters to me the most.
