latitude is wild. Baghdad is further north than San Diego, Tunis (northern most large city in Africa) is parallel to Fresno, Alaska is parallel to the UK (and parts of it are south of London) which itself has a southern point almost 300 miles north of the northernmost point of Japan, and Toronto and Portland Maine are both hundreds of miles south of Portland, Oregon.

you know who else is wild? longitude

Los Angeles is on the same latitude as Charleston, South Carolina

Top reason why an Alderson disk is better.

"and Toronto and Portland Maine are both hundreds of miles south of Portland, Oregon"
That one, I don't think I'd heard before, and I was surprised enough that I actually popped open Google Earth to check. I didn't measure an exact distance, but, yeah, wow, Toronto is indeed further south than Portland, Oregon, looks like. Not that I thought you were lying -- but like you said, latitude is wild, and I was having some trouble believing that one anyway. :D

dang had no idea Portland, Oregon was so far north compared to Toronto! crazy

Okay, so, I knew one of the things stopping Toronto from becoming the capital of the country way back when was being too close to the US at a time when we were still worried about you invading us. Still, that spiky bit of Ontario that dips below the rest of the Canada/US border is a deep well of this kind of hilarity.

Tallahassee, Florida is west of the entirety of continental South Africa.

The southernmost point of Canada is further south than Rome or Barcelona.

I love shit like this honestly. You can go greater than halfway around the world without leaving the Pacific Ocean (although you do have to go through the Philippines), and Spain and New Zealand are at comparable but opposite latitudes. The northernmost point in the continental U.S. is in Minnesota, because the treaty establishing the border was written before the Lake of the Woods was mapped -- you have to take a boat to get there without going through Canada.

I knew about that little nipple so to speak of Minnesota but didn't know you have to take a fucking boat there that's hilarious
