Sunbeam Sparkle is not a good pony. She might not be pure evil, but she is ruthless, ambitious, and so power-hungry that she would even aspire to usurp Celestia's throne. Worse, she succeeds in manipulating Celestia into not only surrendering rule over Equestria, but her immortality as well.

It is often said that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. In most cases that’s true. Many good ponies have begun with good intentions, but slowly lost their way. However, this is not always the case. A rare few virtuous ponies have the character and strength of will to resist temptation, and are never corrupted by their authority.

Even rarer, there comes a time when gaining power makes a pony better than they were before. This is one such story.

Twilight Sparkle is aware that the manipulation of matter at the sub-atomic level is a potential source of enormous amounts of free energy. She also knows that this is extremely dangerous, and that these spells are only for the highest level unicorns. She is therefore somewhat concerned to discover that Pinkie Pie has found another way to do this, with a curious contraption in the basement of Sugarcube Corner.

Why do Alicorns exist? What purpose do such powerful beings hold in this world?
And what happened to the others?

Royal duties used to be the only thing on newly crowned princess Twilight Sparkle's mind. When Princess Celestia summons her to discuss the responsibilities that come with the title of Princess of Magic, Twilight learns the truth about alicorns and their purpose to life in Equestria. The weight of the crown is measured in the bodies and souls of the citizens of Equestria, but that's not to say that both are needed to maintain balance and order.

My life in Canterlot has been always relatively easy, if not a bit charmed.

One could easily say my life is even perfect.

Perfect, if not for the fact that I'm already a full fledged stallion and STILL don't have my cutie mark...

Something happened to Fluttershy, and now no one knows where she is. The cops found her bag in the park, a part of her dress, and her phone. It's all Rainbow can do to stay stable, now that the one she loved is gone, possibly forever.
