As I gear up for working on a new writing piece, I know I'm going to have a decent number of bat ponies to name, sometimes in the spur of the writing moment. As such, I was wondering what kind of themes would be best to base bat pony names on. Not so much personality naming, but the elements to guide in picking and choosing parts of compound names.

Shadow and darkness of course being the most obvious themes.

For example, the only two I have settled on are Night Squall, based on him being a night weather worker and one who specialises in storms, and Clipped Ears, based on the fact she has stubby ears and thus struggles with echo location.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tael.

The most common themes I’m aware of are night, moon, shadow, darkness, coolness (in terms of temperature), and sky. Things like that. I think it would work to add in themes you think are appropriate for bats and stuff like that, like your Clipped Ears one relating to echolocation.

Off the top of my head a potentially good name might be Silent Flight, or something like that, because of stealth. As another example, a friend of mine came up with the name Sound Cloud (yes, I know about the streaming service) for a character I hope to use some day (so please don’t use that name). I’m struggling to think of more, though, mostly because it’s getting late.

Gloamwing, Stalactite, Dusk Fall, Shadowsneak, Blindstray, Night Shine, Olmfoot, Eventide Keen-ears, Adorabat, Sneaky-Breeki, Batman, Fluffmeister, The Big Floof.

I tend to use thematic elements that are fanonically 'associated' with batponies, namely the night sky, stars, space, etc. As well as sharp objects or plays on their physical features for at least one of either their first or last names.

OC examples of mine:

Stella Sabre
Ocula Spectre
Coruscant Dusk
Emeralda Nightshade

Your mileage may vary tho. That's just me

Thank you all. It really does help.

And you need not worry about me taking names, is why I was looking more for the themes and added my two examples. Fluffmeister, The Big Floof and Adorabat caught my attention.

Already thinking along the lines of Whisper and Rush in some form for a couple of them as a result.

There are plenty of night themed things that don't necessarily have to deal with shadows, moons, stars, or the like. You can do a quick Google search and find many types of flowers that bloom at night. You can tie them to more nocturnal animals, bugs, and other things that are primarily associated with night (when do you actually see fireflies? Night, right?) as well. Or objects that you might use more at night than in the day--lamps for example. There are plenty of day/night neutral things you can tie them to as well for naming.

Thank you. Some of your suggestions I hadn't even considered. Going to be very interesting when I start the personality crafting with such a wide array of possible themes now.

For me [a very long hiatused writer] the way I approached naming my main bat pony charrie was thinking of how she was someone amongst the crowd that felt excluded yet a few went through it to include it. The way to describe her story was 'A Diamond in the Rough' aka the title of my story. Then proceeded to make me inspire her name to be gem based. Yet, at the same time, a bit more related to how she's still the type to remain excluded despite others wanting to reach out to her-- thus the adjective came of jaded into "Jaden".

A lot of my pony names that I come up with is based off of personality, adjectives, and items/themes for the pony in mind. ^^'

Thank you. Personality will be a big part of their name creation. Didn't want to end up with half or more of them having night in their name due to lack of variety in themes though. This call for help has been very useful.

Hopefully it will help others too.

Maybe I'm just stereotyping, but I tend to use more vampiric associated names in conjunction with night or astronomical terms (Dracul Nebula, Vladimir Dusk).

Fruit. Fruit and weapons.

Occasionally something cute.

I mainly name them after their level of fluffiness then add a fruit/herb to them.

Usually I use night themed names. Nocturne, Nightseer, Nightwatch etc. Alternatively I fall back on pegasi names, like Sky Striker, Storm Weaver etc. And, well other names work too, like Firestorm or Lion Heart.

Before I lost steam on one of my earlier stories I was working on an arc involving the vampire mafia, for the threstal minions I’d pick anything night-related; Evening “Eve” Mist, Shooting Star, Lambent, etc. Actual vampires of any tribe I’d make it sound more menacing or blood-themed; Harvest Moon, Bella Carmine, Crimson Delight, Don Sanguini (very proud of that one lol)

7029970 Let's see. I've used Pumpernickel, Rye, Laminia (technically, it means 'broken'), Nectarine, Sunshine, Stargazer... It doesn't hurt to use inverses, such as naming a gloomy gus 'Cheery Meadowlark' or a stern taskmaster Lax, or even Martingale. A good source is to look up innovative names people have come up with for horse tack in all of its splendor.

Heh, guess I'm the odd one out in that my bat pony is named after me ^^;

Wouldn't be surprised, with the many options all of you have kindly and generously provided, that when it comes to naming my bat ponies now, I won't be struggling. Instead, the explosion of my brain may be heard across oceans, leaving me far more mentally drained, but not frustrated, than I thought possible.

Thank you all.
