Him saying that Nazis are conservative shows his ignorance on this subject.

Neo-Nazis=fairly typical Conservatives

Misogynists=fairly typical Liberals

Forgive me if I'm being a little hard, but both claims are a load of bologna, and are simply not giving either side, and the American populace in general, for that matter, nearly enough credit for their more positive traits.

But on a more in-depth and kindly note, the fact of the matter is, I grew up enough and learned enough to realize that to an extent, terms like "Conservatism" and "Liberalism" are so dependent on place and time. You see, it varies based on place and time because it largely depends on what you're being Conservative and Liberal about in the first place. A Conservative is basically somebody who's trying to preserve something, and a Liberal is somebody who's trying to change something. That's it. Actually, in a way, Neo-Nazis are old-school Conservatives....in Russia. Not necessarily in the USA, but definitely in Russia (and Neo-Nazis compose a lot of Conservatives and Liberals in France! :trollestia:) See what I mean? Very place & time dependent terms we're talking about here, as well as what you're specifically trying to conserve or change. As an afterthought, I think the fact it's hard to tell where an internet poster comes from is part of the very reason why the definitions have become so screwy these days.

However, historical revisionism doesn't seem to help: The narrative seems to be that it's always been contemporary right-wing ideals vs. contemporary left-wing ideals, that it was always that way and it will always be that way, but the reality is far more complicated than that. A lot of the ideals that modern Conservatives believe in were considered Liberal back when the Civil War was in full swing, "Liberal Republicans" they were called, but they weren't opposing anybody like our modern Liberal Democrats, they were opposing people who believed in things that virtually nobody believes in now, like the idea of resisting the Industrial Revolution and maintaining slavery. Ideas, as it turns out, come and go; in fact, in some cases, have died, or at least lost popularity, during recorded history. The "Liberals" during the Civil War won out, and decades later, they became the Conservatives, and I don't mean that they changed their views, they were always pro-industry and anti-slavery, and I just mean that after abolishing the old establishment, they became the new establishment, and tried to maintain this new order. The ideas that our modern Liberal Democrats believe in became popular decades after the Civil War ended. Again, ideas can be born, and have been born, or at least popularized, during recorded history.
