You could also make interesting threads. For instance, you could make a thread where we could debate who believes in true gods and who is a heretic. Everybody could present his/her arguments to justify his/her belief. People seem to get very invested in debates like that and are motivated to join and put in their own opinion.

And yes, advertisement can help also.
