It's Twilight Sparkle's birthday and even though she thinks her friends are throwing her a surprise party, they don't seem to be very busy. Not with preparing a party at least. It's almost as if they've forgotten and that to them, today is any other day.
This is something I wrote for my friend Twilightsparkle13 as today (assuming it doesn't take forever to be approved) is her birthday and I wanted to do something nice. So as long as she's happy with it I'm happy with it. Comedy tag thrown on for inanity, no actual laughs guaranteed, as per usual with my comedy fics. I'm British, we have a different sense of humour.

While there may have been references, I didn't make any to Jackle and Mic. I only reference the show, and not music or other fics. Except once in Working Towards The Future but that's in a chapter that won't be up for a while yet.

well yes but the concept of a surprise party is entirely hinged around the "surprise" part. it just doesn't seem to me like two "surprise's" are necessary. it is a rather catchy title, though.

But if you know that a surprise party is coming, then it's not a surprise party anymore. If somepony is expecting a surprise party, then they lose the hope that they're getting one, then it becomes an actual surprise again. Therefore it is a surprise surprise. At the very least it certainly sounds like something Pinkie would say/do doesn't it?

If everything went off without a hitch it would be a very short, and very boring story. Unfortunately there isn't much conflict you can do with a birthday story. It tends to always be "somepony forgot".

This implies that Twilight thinks it strange that dragons can experience romantic affection. That's pretty cold. Spike's always been treated like an equal.

it was nice and fluffy, but flawed despite being a very sweet birthday gift (happy birthday twilightsparkle13!). Everyone was pretty off. Twilight doesn't have any solid motivation for going so far as to spy on her friends just to see if they were planning her party. And did the value of genuinely surprising Twilight really make up for the emotional grief and dejection her friends caused her? It was very nice of you to write it as a birthday surprise, but it could've been a little better.
