Based on Agrol's Your nightmare video. A strange shadow pony starts attacking and killing in the small village of Brumby Junction, but for some reason, only the unicorns seem to be in any danger. To make matters worse, the sudden holiday season and mysterious nature means that the law is at a loss to try and fix things. Who could this mysterious shadow pony be, and why are they just attacking the unicorns?
Just an FYI, as a student of literature and as someone who's trying to improve his narative capabilities through writing (hence the fanfics) I take plagerism seriously, I got permission from Agrol before publishing this.

Is this grimdark (i.e., a "KILL THEM. KILL THEM ALL" story) or a murder mystery? I really hope it's the latter...

Absolutely NOT a grimdark. There was no "horror" for the maturity setting, it was either for sexual theme or gore so I chose gore. That said, next chapter will feature some blood (or rather, a reaction to seeing it) but beyond that and a general description of the attack (aftermath) it's more about fear and mystery then it is about gore. I've read Cupcakes and no, it's not my style, I just don't like it. So no, not grimdark.
2823095 Thank God for that... So, is it a murder mystery, then, more along the lines of Sherlock Holmes, Criminal Minds, or Perry Mason? I like reading murder mysteries, but this one's opener seems pretty graphic so far...
