This story is a sequel to When the Man Comes Around

The sixteenth story in the Journey of Graves.

The current directive is simple: deliver the package to the appropriate parties before the clock runs out. So what does Graves do when all the forces of fate and nature conspire to prevent him from completing his mission?

His job, that's what. This is Gunmetal Graves, and if there's one thing he's good at, it's getting the job done.

Took forever. Some dingus kept rejecting it because I linked to my first story. Blegh, bureaucracy. :twilightangry2:

“Graves…” she said slowly. “You… do realize that Hearth’s Warming Day isn't till tomorrow… right?”
“…”
“…”
“… Hah?”

I lost it right there :rainbowlaugh:

The Rescuers Down Under, eh? Good one.
Also, love your timing with publishing this.

Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times its enemy action, four times and its personal :rainbowlaugh:

Take it easy you guys and enjoy yourselves. :pinkiehappy:

First reaction, it felt so relatable, with the exception of near death every single time, I don't usually go through that. More of a Saturday thing. Trying to do something important, to only constantly be stopped and bothered by stupid inconveniences. Trying to remain calm as each one wears at your sanity more and more, to the point where you forget important details.

Secondly, this was so freaking adorable. The comedy in the beginning was amusing, but when it all came down to the reason, it stops being funny and traverses into an even greater realm. A man who undoubtedly sucks at expressing certain emotions instead putting himself through hell, simply because he believes actions speak louder than words. You can understand why he is upset, why he is willing to put himself through all of that, because in the end that is what the holidays should be about. Spending time with the ones you love. For a man whose family has been the military for most of his life, it is easy to see what makes this so important, and all the more touching.

Finally that ending line, the return of the comedy, though more light hearted and silly over bothersome and comically coincidental.

Even without knowing the characters, this is a beautiful testament to what the holidays actually mean. Warms even this scrooges heart, though I still refuse to tolerate the music. Thanks for the hard work and Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Kwanza, or whatever alternative you spend. Me...a Festivus for the rest of us. Now to get my pole.

Most epic Christmas tale ever :rainbowdetermined2:

Also a quick thought - and I don't mean to sound pervy - Rarity and Graves are dating, that's established, but (when) will they get it on? I'm interested to see how they'll handle that stage in their relationship :trollestia:

Yay! It was rather humorous, sweet, d'aww worthy, and perfectly paced. You sir, are a master, and I humbly request more when you can.

Another good one.
Nothing against these one-shots, but have you any story arcs planned? Just curious.

I think you need some more random citizen love. You are pretty amazing GentlemanJ. Merry Jinglemas.

3678418 There will be a few more shorts, then a truly epic saga the likes of which has never been seen before nor shall be seen ever again. So shall it be written, so shall it be done.

3678582 Wow, now that's a promise! Looking forward to it!

That was epicly hilarious, congrats sir.

This pleases me. A great Christmas present for all your fans. Graves is such a good guy. Thanks for all your hard work!

Graves, that poor poor bastard. Great story like usual man, can't wait for more!

By the time he got on the train, I was simply expecting the train robbers.

That was epic and very funny.

J...
seriously. I fuckin love this story.

As soon as I read the title, I knew...I friggin knew haha!
Spec-fucking-tacular!

EDIT: HE ROAD A RIVER SERPENT AFTER IT BROKE HIS GODDAMN BOAT! :rainbowlaugh:

Right rom the start I thought "Hm, I bet he will be there when he wants, but then realises that he is a day early..."
Felt good by the end! :pinkiehappy:

Great story once again. I'll wait for more to come!

XD all that crap to get there a day early
Que mind break

3678582 I was just wondering what made you decide on Rarity as the love interest. I like her a lot in this role, but towards the beginning of the graves story were you still trying to figure out who to put him with?

3685276 Truth be told, the entire Journey of Graves series started because I wanted to ship best pony Rarity with a good man. :rainbowlaugh: I've always thought she was the most wonderfully complex character, and Graves came forth as a man who could proudly stand beside her.

hilarious thanks for the Christmas present:pinkiehappy::pinkiesmile::yay::moustache::raritystarry::raritywink::duck:

a little late but MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND HAPPY NEW YEAR:flutterrage::yay::moustache::moustache::pinkiegasp::pinkiegasp:

Oh gosh, this story was just brilliant. I was chuckling to myself the entire time as Graves went about his quest being awesome despite the efforts of the universe, but then that ending line. I don't think I've laughed that hard in a long time. Thank you.

So... was he early or late?

Also, I can't wait for the next main part! I'm still hoping for some AJxHemmingmane!

Ha! that ending! and Graves still holds the title of the king of badasses on this cite.

The crackling shaft of lightning found home, striking the dire bear cleanly in the neck, severing spine and nerve before slicing through and exploding in a supernova of light in the hissing snow beneath.

What kind of BS sorcery is this? As far as any expanation we got so far went, Graves can only peform one offensive spell, and lightning does not work that way.
'Douchy McNitpick mode' disengaged

Nice holiday special, even though it's clearly not my cup of tea. Moar world building and serious action please.

3972345 condensed lightning in solid form? lightning is technically plasma, so compact it enough, maybe it became solid?

3972345 The intense heat of the lightning probably works as a plasma cutter would. Remember, this is focused magical lightning, not natural lightning.

1)The idea of shooting lightning is pure BS in on itself, but being a common trope it have a good amount of Suspension of Disbelief credit, IF it works as in fiction.

2) During the lightning strike a heated plasma channel is formed, yes, but it acts nothing like a channel created by a plasma cutter, not to mention the distance aspect.

3)I can't see why it wasn't enough to just make Graves' attack electrocute poor Fuzzums or melt his face off. IMHO, one should either stick with one of the classic fictional variants or abide RL's rules to the T, unless there is a reason to invoke his artistic license in Physics.

4952286 4069423 4936871 It can happen, as the skills of Gunmetal Graves are not bound by your aesthetic preferences.

4952286 The reason for artistic lisence was covered in the first part of your answer, it's magic. Please don't try to apply too many real life laws of physics to it.

4953145
:pinkiegasp:
So you are saying that an author can exercise his aesthetic and intellectual freedom in his works? What is this heresy?!

Well, at least he is pretty tame as far as high-fantasy protagonists go. Just got too accustomed to mundane-level people recently reading almost exclusively Sholkhov, is all.

hoping to Celestia and praying to Luna

praying to Luna

hmmmm, fitting

I love the Dead Rising cover art. And the story was the funniest yet.

4990398 Dead Rising? My friend, I believe you are slightly confounded in the noodle, as this is definitely from Majora's Mask, the most under appreciated of all Zelda games. Masks for teh winz! :yay:

4990891 Oh. The picture seems similar to a pop-up that shows up in Dead Rising, since you have only three days to solve the case in the game. Either way, I am still waiting for the day we get a story about Graves getting absolutely hammered and walking around Ponyville drunk.

Graves just can't seem to catch a break, can he? :facehoof:

Ladies and Gentleman, please observe the best and most well-written example of the "punch-line". This is how you make it work.
Goodbye.

“Then why were you on a train?”
“'Cause the river snake tried to eat me.”
“Why were you canoodling with river snakes?”
“'Cause my horse got tired from the timber wolves.”
"And why were you out playing with timber wolves?"
"'Cause someone blew up the airship."

This part broke me... "canoodling with river snakes"...heeheehee!:pinkiehappy:

“… Hah?”

Lol.

The marshal was a patient man. Most of the time. Right now wasn’t one of those times as Graves found his travels waylaid once more. Once, he could understand. Twice, maybe. Three times was clearly enough. But four? Four was just out of the question. So as the Ghost of Thunder straightened his hat, charged up his spell gun, and made his way outside to conduct his official duties of maintaining the order, he did so with a good deal more vehemence and enthusiasm than was usually required.

Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action. Four times? Now it's personal!
