Ahhh cultural issues, mixed with a hatchling's viewpoint and education, though she does seem blessed with quite a fair bit of intellect to balance it.

I really like this so far. Reminds me a bit of Changeling Courtship Rituals, with the "misunderstanding" of Twilight "submitting" to Instar.

Pretty cute so far.
I'm actually curious how Inset's relationship will grow with Twilight. She doesn't seem to see her in a purely 'food' manner, which is good. I can see possessive older sister eventually. In the future, possibly doting or critical in a motherly manner. I can't imagine lover for quite some time if ever, because y'know, mentally a very smart newborn. That and she might actually only be attracted to other changelings.
It'll also be interesting to see other changelings react. I mean, Chrysalis is bad but apparently they need a queen. So reluctant acceptance? Instinctive relief? Something complicated?
Twilight's relationship with a newborn sure is heating up!

Instar is mentally a child. A newborn in fact, younger than a one year old and hence a zero year old. While she is physically about the same age as Twilight, it is as if a baby was mind-swapped into her body. It's much more fitting and morally sound for their relationship to be more familial than romantic considering Instar is nowhere near old or intelligent enough yet to give informed consent. Of course, any such laws in Equestria would be far more complicated than on Earth since they have a bunch of different species that mature at wildly different rates, so there is no way to know what the age of consent would be for changelings. If they mature within a few years as in many fanfics, then the age of consent would likely be around there. Of course, Harmony did seem to give her some form of intelligence so it is hard to say what maturity she is actually at. As far as I can tell, and what the characters in this say, she is at the level of a really smart child operating mostly on instinct.
The story is labelled slowburn romance, so it may be literally all the way through her growing up before Twilight actually sees her that way or it may be a timeskip to a more reasonable age.
Of course, Twilight is immortal, so it's hard to say how that affects consent laws. Nothing we have can translate exactly over to Equestrian society.

I want this fic to be just as much about the physiological changes a Changeling goes through while becoming a new queen, while also showing a blossoming love and an earned redemption arc for a Villain that, arguably, started out with her best intentions for her hive.

Yeah, I wasn't happy about that ending either, honestly. Instead of spending her life amongst her friends in Ponyville, where HER castle is, Twilight's been forced to separate from them to do a duty she never liked nor wanted.
Just...no. Bugger off, Hasbro; Twilight never wanted to be a princess, never liked being treated as one, and likely never wanted to usurp her mentor and idol.
What could Luna do? Go all Majora's Mask and slam the moon into the planet? Cause tidal waves, if lunar mechanics are somewhat the same as Earth's?
We all know Flurry can cause blizzards, so she's a definite threat, but Cadence? I guess a mind-controlled Cadence could cause ponies to fall in love with each other, resulting in a massive orgy, but...that's not life-threatening. Weak princess.
Twilight could do practically anything, so she's definitely a threat too.

That would be entertaining to see, actually - a completely accidental takeover of Ponyville. The changeling queen wasn't intending on that whatsoever, but through a series of hijinks and mishaps she's now the ruler.
