After a run in with the Dazzlings where they reveal exactly how much they knew about her past, Sunset did exactly what anypony back where she came from would do. She sang a song about her feelings, letting it all out. What happened at the end of her song though is what is bothering her. She knew her friends at the time transformed anytime they played music... she didn't realize that she could transform too. The problem? She transformed into a humanized phoenix not a humanized unicorn.
In an attempt to learn why she would transform into that, she runs away back to Equestria to do a little investigation into the matter. With her friends from both sides of the portal trying to find out what's bothering her, and give her a helping hoof, I mean hand, can she find out the truth behind Sunset Shimmer...?

The mentioned senior year, that was AFTER Evergreen, seeing has they were still students in the episodes following...maybe a year later. Sunset Shimmer's been stewing on that tidbit for a long time then.

Yes... but not during the song/short My Past is not today. Technically they had her turn into a phoenix so as to show as to put emphasis on the fact that she is working on being a 'whole new person'. She's changed from her old self to a newer, better version......
She turned into a phoenix to show that she has changed and is starting anew. Does any of that makes sense, or am I just confusing you more... go watch My past is not today. Then you'll understand. (Hint: It takes place before the 'final battle'. Shortly after the Dazzlings bullied Sunset, making her question whether or not she will ever leave the bad girl reputation behind her.)

Even ignoring the most likely incorrect statement on my end regarding the intended debut movie for that song.... It is CANONICALLY SHOWN that she "phoenixed up," as i am now dubbing it, twice in the history of Equestria Girls, once during a song again to help what became a friend in need

I don't know... I guess somewhere in the back of my mind, it makes sense to me that a school should have a fence around it. Maybe to keep criminals from breaking into it during the night when they're running from the cops or something.
I'll let you know if I ever figure out why there is a fence there.

Uh oh, Sunset's pulling a Twilight. Getting so caught up in a puzzle that the rest of the multiverse becomes irrelevant. Hopefully she doesn't get too far along in ignoring everyone before someone wises her up to the possible consequences.
