Wow. Amazing.

That was beautiful, thank you!
I expect this to be on the featured page at the latest tomorrow at the soonest sometime later today

Not many sapients can say they've stared down a supernova, that's an exclusive club right there.

He never did get to eat that biscuit...

If only the Windigoes could have been brought back, they could have cooled the world and saved everypony. But that fire of friendship kept them away.

Beautiful. Heartwrenching, but for it all the more beautiful. Thank you.

Well, you were right, I think!

When it comes to red giants, I wonder if staring at it would be as terrible as looking at our normal sun since a red giant is usually not as bright as a yellow sun—but it's much larger though.

And yes, he forgot to eat that biscuit. But I heard an old song on the radio some time ago about how love will keep the singer alive, so perhaps it's a similar mentality with friendship.

Well, no ponies around place leads to no disharmony for the Windigos to eat. Can't be enemies with other people if there are no other people to begin with. One possible reason why we don't see any Windigos in the Season 5 finale ashlands timeline: the headcanon that everyone is dead.

And to you and everyone else I've pinged: thank you for reading! It is good that you've enjoyed it.

Well, no ponies around place leads to no disharmony for the Windigos to eat

Food for thought: if our narrator was battling himself (outliving everypony you've ever known must be hard on the psyche), that would create a tentative disharmony, and with no harmony either from other ponies to balance it out, would that be enough for the Windigos to emerge? :derpyderp1:

Sheesh. This is going in my Hall of Famous Favourites folder. Wow. You are an amazing writer.

Doubt that it would be enough for the windigos to return. I think there also needs to be some physical coldness as well as emotional coldness for the windigos to return. The climate at that point in time would be far too hot.

I agree with Angel here that one pony's disharmony alone may not be enough. If I may: he may have chaos in himself, but he's in no capacity to spread that disharmony to others if there are no others there, keeping that disharmony locked up and unable to let it multiply.

I just had the fleeting thought of desert/sand Windigos, but whenever the Windigos show up in the show, they only bring in cool and chill—nothing hot like a heat wave.

This was brilliantly written! Sad and poignant, but perfectly paced and with a very strong ending.

That was beautiful. I teared up a bit at the end. And that prayer spoke to me of my own faith in God, that He gives unexpected blessings, that we are never alone. Thank you for sharing this touching story.

...Is it worth pointing out that the Big Rip is sorta the opposite of Heat Death? Guess I just did.

Yes I am well aware that that is not the point. :P

Thank you for coming along for the ride! And God does provide unexpected blessings, and that friendship is a great blessing even in the most bleak of circumstances.

Edit: Before I forget, some of the words there, if they weren't that recognizable at first, were actually said by Alice as the final words on Best Gift Ever as shown here.

10496931
Well, if you want to put it another way, you can see The Big Rip as a reference to how everything's just falling apart both metaphorically as a whole and literally by the end of the story. Though I did go for naming the chapter like that because of the universe's end as its common theme with Heat Death.

The planet of equestria and its sapient inhabitants made it to heatdeath. What a wonderful and horrible achievment.

10494088
I wonder if the final ponies and the protagonist themself begged for windegos. They may have died. Otherwise they woulda been out for sure. Its only endless cold after the heatdeath, what a party! Unless they're waiting it out due to the gruesomly powerful sun.

Depends on how you portray them. Cannon wise, they woulda been out, accidently staving the effectsof the heat death by being cold generating spirits of hate and spite.

Large God bless, total masterpiece.

Howdy, hi~!

My goodness, that one hit close to home. Absolutely adore this short story. The pacing was on point, and everything that needed to be said was said. I actually knew the answer to the riddle as soon as she asked it, and was glad that Spiral Star got to spend their final moments in the company of another. Such an absolutely bittersweet read.

Thank you for the fic~!
