Botched Lobotomy

Imprisoned (without charges) by the Paw Patrol

T

Following the accidental demise of an aging Lightning Dust, her lifelong photographer Photo Finish opens a new show in her memory. You wander the gallery walls examining each image carefully. As they flow together, slowly, a story begins to emerge. Is it the right one? Who gets to tell it? Who was Lightning Dust, really?

A meditation on memory, art, and time.

Thanks for writing this.

Even with all the photos in the world, you can't truly preserve someone who's died. Eventually, they will be forgotten. And even the preservation is imperfect.
But that doesn't mean the effort isn't beautiful, isn't worth it.

I feel like there's more to get, to take away. The fact that Lightning Dust and Photo Finish, two antagonistic and controversial figures, are the main... Subjects? Of this piece feels like it says something, maybe about how your worst moments aren't the whole, but they are what linger.

It's the very last paragraph sticks with me, though.

it has more realism and emotional depth than my life.. they seem so much like real people that really had stuff happen to them
anyone have any theories about the bandage

This has an excellent meditative quality, with hidden levity and heart throughout. "Third thing, indeed!" Great implementation of an experimental style.

Exquisite work, especially in expressing a purely visual medium through text and the memories each photo evokes. I especially love these two bonding over their respective grudges against a different pegasus on the Council of Friendship. The way its presented really does feel like walking through the exhibition, and the last paragraph is a chilling reminder of any memorial's ultimate futility.

But in the long run, we're all dead and forgotten. Better to share the good times while the opportunity's still there. Thank you for this, and best of luck in the judging.

Read this months ago but neglected to write a review.

This is a pretty cool way to tell this story, and even with the indirect presentation, you could feel for Lightning and Photo's connection.
