2322229 Morning, and thanks for the comment! I feel this really does bring up a few factors that I myself have wished to discuss, and I believe this might be the perfect time to mention them. Hope you don't mind a wall of text being posted back as I take a little time to explain a bit about my reasoning.
For your first question however, it was indeed based off of Dwarf Fortress, specifically a game played in the DF2010 build. Of course, the story-line is loosely based off of it because I did not want it to be specifically for players of the game, but a Dwarf Fortress player can easily catch some of the game's happenings (Flinch's scenario, for one of the best examples, was a failed Strange Mood). Songring is also not the only settlement that Ben will take part in, but that will be discussed in just a moment.
I wanted to make some mention of the fact that the story regarding his father has not been resolved. Thank you for bringing this up, for it is something that has itched at me as well and have been trying to do a very careful job of not dropping it entirely, but not letting it dominate the psychology of our protagonist (and admittedly, doing a poor job at this. I apologize). There are two major reasons that the story of his father has not been resolved yet, the first being that I subscribe more to the theory of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs for Ben's actions, and finding his father falls under self-actualization. Ben's physiological and saftey needs are constantly challenged (between needing money, needing to keep from being sent to the moon, etc.), which shifts his focus. I had hoped to use this as a representation of something that all of us face: Losing sight of our goals. Between school, work, relationships, there are many times in life that our major goals are lost to us from time to time and we have to go back and rediscover them at some point. There is a future section that Ben grapples with the fact that he has not been searching for his father, so I hope you will still be around when it is released.
The second reason is that once Ben's father is found, that is the end of Ben's story. The overarching goal of finding his father is the reason he continues to record his journey in his journal. However, through this, I wish to promise you that by the end of this trilogy, the story of Ben and his father does have closure. It might not be quite in the way one would expect. There is much more story in between however, including more service from Ben to the crown, so I apologize if you're hoping for a quick resolution to his searching.
Lastly, even if you did get it right, I wouldn't ask you to revise your comment. I just won't admit whether or not it's correct.
2327362 That did indeed interest me! Thanks for mentioning it. I wish I could say that I had planned for such, but it would be completely coincidental.
On your suggestion, I started looking up some of the domestic uses of lead for myself, and was surprised by the number of answers I got back. I could not seem to find any that struck me as immediately apparent for Ben to realize or that would ease Songring's needs however, so I cannot promise a further mention of the use of the lead in this first journal. However, I might indeed have it be a note of intrigue in the second novel as there will be no doubt for recollections of the events of Songring, including the discovery of the galena formations.
It is very late for me however, so perhaps I'm not exactly at my most scholarly right now...
Is the alicorn voiced by Claudia Black?
3006060 Well, now it's there. It's stuck in my head. I've gone back to review some of Absinthe's lines after the question, and now I only hear Morrigan speaking. Hope you're proud of yourself.
Not the bees!
