I technically got home two days ago, but I was so excited to be back and tired from the journey that I’ve held back from writing for a few days. Being back in Cloudsdale isn’t what I thought it was going to be. I knew the war had changed so much, but I didn’t expect it to change like this. Most of the homes are being boarded up or have been abandoned by others seeking refuge in places like Ponyville and Canterlot. Families I knew in my neighborhood are completely gone. Businesses have closed down as well with many unable to support themselves due to war effort and high taxes to keep it going.
Soldiers are patrolling the entire streets with checkpoints and there is a curfew now. The worst are the faces I see. Expressions of utter despair and fear as ponies look into the sky every so often in fear of seeing an attack. Wreaths are put on display over the lawns of those who have died in battle or from the human’s air raids with the photos of those who died. Some of them I recognized. Like Sports Rush, who always wanted to be a professional racer. Bam Bam, who loved making thunder effects at the Weather Factory. Surprise, who was one of the most joyful ponies I ever met in my life. All of them are gone to their eternal rest with their ashes flying forever in the air.
Yet for all the depressing scenes that lay before me it was all overcome by the joy of seeing my family again. My sister couldn’t stop crying as she nearly tackled me off the cloud we lived in. To be honest, I couldn’t either. There were times when I thought I was never going to see her again, but holding her made me thankful to the alicorns that I was alive so far.
My parents were next. My mother was amazed by how muscled I was. If there was one thing the war prevents its getting fat. She was quick to rush me in while asking me what I wanted to eat as my father just smiled and hugged me, whispering how proud he was of me. I could only smile back and hug him.
That evening we ate as we laughed about anything that wasn’t about the war. It was just for that one night we felt like a normal family again without any fear of the humans. I missed it so much that I even cried a few times, but my family thankfully didn’t say anything and just let me let it out before we had dessert.
That evening, my father and I went to the roof to have a hard drink. We didn’t say much, but then I told him my doubts and my fears of losing my faith.
That was when Dad told me something I never thought I’d hear from him.
The Princesses were not gods.
I was shocked. My father ran a church. He worshiped the Princesses for years. All his life. He turned to me and said it was a bitter realization, but he said that there was no point in denying what was real in front of us. If the Princesses were gods they wouldn’t have died. They would have protected us better. No, it was clear they were mortal like the rest of us with god-like powers.
I asked him if this meant that there were no gods, but he said he didn’t believe that. He still believed that there was something out there. Some being or power that was guiding everything around us in some unknown way. Maybe it played a huge role in our lives or maybe it didn’t. Maybe it was one of the human gods or the ancient gods' ponies prayed too. Regardless, he still had faith something was out there and the one thing he believed in most was Equestria.
A nation of friendship. Harmony. Unity. And Love.
That was why he still had the church opened despite denying his former worship. Because in the darkest of times like these ponies needed faith. Even if they didn’t believe, they needed it. Because that small bit of faith can lead to hope. A hope that we’ll all come out of this alive.
And so I no longer pray to the princesses. I still love them. I still follow them because they are our rulers, but I no longer see them as our gods. I don’t know if there is a god or not, but frankly I don’t care. I believe in Equestria. I believe in my father.
I believe in us.

Despite now accepting the fact that the princesses were not gods, I still went to my father’s service at church. Mostly because I missed it. The prayers. The literature. The singing. I felt more at peace there then I had in nearly a year.
Afterward, I went out with my sister to the graveyard to pay our respects to those I know who died. Pegasi are cremated after their funerals and their ashes either preserved by their families or scattered into the wind. Unlike graveyards down below, ours just are clouds shaped in the cutie mark of the deceased. After giving my prayers, I met with someone unexpected. My ex-coltfriend, Dalewind. He was there as well to give his prayers. We chatted over coffee while my sister left us for us to catch up.
I could tell Dalewind missed me, even tried to hold my hoof a few times, but I told him I was with somepony else now which made him give me a sad smile. After saying our goodbyes, I went back home. I also decided to tell my family about Thundershot and I. They were happy to hear that I had someone special back in the military, with Dad promising to marry us after the war. I miss Thundershot so much. I wish he was with me to visit my family. If there is anything I want if I survive this war it's to be with him.
There wasn’t much else done today. I just stayed home and played games with my family. Maybe I’ll dream of Thundershot tonight. Hopefully nothing that will wet my sheets.

I finally got asked about the war. It was kind of unavoidable due to what’s happened. There was an attempt to assassinate Princess Celestia yesterday. Not by a human but by one of her own generals in the army. Apparently, he blamed her for everything and that Equestria was doomed unless they surrendered. He killed himself before he could be captured.
To have one of Princess Celestia’s own generals betray her like that...I honestly don’t know what to think. I finally got asked if the war was that bad. I answered it was as bad as it could be. Before I knew it, I was telling them everything. Jerusalem. India. Sri Lanka. The dead. The wounded. The screams. The bombings. The guns. How you made a friend one day before saying farewell to their coffin. The endless nightmares in your sleep as you see the faces of your allies and enemies haunting you while dragging you into the abyss. The fact that you know you could day at any moment. The amount of hate you see in a human’s eyes as they try to shoot you down.
The days you think about just ending it all just to have it all silenced.
I.. I can’t write anymore. I just can’t.

I’m going back to the front lines. My vacation got shortened because it's believed that the invasion is just a month away. A month. A single month before the battle of our lives begins.
A month before our fate is decided. Will Equestria survive or not.
I think of my family. Of my sister smiling and promising me to come home.
I won’t fail them.
I cannot fail them.
Equestria must survive.

The first thing I did was check up on Thundershot. He was recovered from his bug and we proceed to have sex the first chance we got. Heavens, I missed his touch.
Come morning, I had to get back into training. We’ve managed to improve our weapons skills in the brief time I was gone. The tanks and artillery were being used to effect and our drills were preparing us for anything.
Morale is also boosted thanks to the fact that the Wonderbolts themselves are going to be fighting with us. Captain Spitfire. Lt. Soarin. Lt. Rainbow Dash. Corporal Scootaloo and many others. They were heroes in this war and they were going to be fighting beside us. The Wonderbolt fan in me is geeking out at the prospect.
I even saw them during our training schedule. They moved like a single unit against the wooden made replicas of the human ships. They were so fast it was almost impossible to see them. I believe they could even dodge gunfire if possible.
The humans won’t know what’s going to hit them when they come to our shores.

Preparations are still being done. We’re now going over drills in what to do should the enemy take the beach. We were given orders to hold the city to the last pony with plans to regroup at key locations should the worst happen. I actually managed to meet Corporal Scootaloo of the Wonderbolts during a break. She’s pretty cool. One of the youngest to ever make it to the Wonderbolts.
She grew up idolizing Rainbow Dash and wanted to be just like her except she was born with tiny wings due to a problem at her birth. Thankfully, she was able to get an operation that gave her new wings to achieve her dream of flying beside her mentor. I asked what Rainbow Dash was like and Scootaloo must have talked for about thirty minutes about how awesome Rainbow Dash was. If it wasn’t for the fact she was already engaged to her friend Apple Bloom, I’d believe she was in love with her.
To my surprise, she actually said she liked humans. She thought they were cool with their gadgets and entertainment. She even made a few friends on their social media sites before she was forced to cancel it due to the war. I pointed out all the problems with humanity, but she said she’d seen similar things in Equestria as well. She saw horrible ponies who had done bad things growing up in her adventures with her friends or heard about from Rainbow Dash. Regardless of her feelings, she was still loyal to Equestria, and if that meant she had to kill humans to protect us then so be it.
I guess I never thought of seeing a pony actually like humans but still willing to fight them. I always thought it was loyalty to your kind or being a traitor like that accursed Lyra Heartstrings. Were there humans who thought the same as us?
Well, it doesn’t matter. The humans are coming here to destroy us and we’re going to give them everything we got.

Testing. Testing. One. Two. Three.
Huh, this spell works.
So, yeah. One of the unicorns in our group taught us a spell on how we could mentally write in our journals without physically writing it. It was a spell the Royal Guard once used in past wars to write their journal entries during battles so they could be recorded for... damnit Thundershot stop feeling my butt.
Wow, he was right. It really can read your thoughts. Hmm, I’m going to have to practice with this outside of my journal. Don’t want it recording me when I’m doing something embarrassing.
Crap, I’m going to be late for shooting practice. How do I shut the sp-

April 21st, 1422 E.F
So I’m using the spell now as I stand in front of a speech being given by Captain Spitfire of the Wonderbolts. My journal is in my armor and I plan on keeping it there during the invasion so it can get my thoughts. Although I hope I don’t die or something and it records something embarrassing as my final words.
I should be paying attention to the speech, but I believe I have to do this. We’re going to be on full alert soon due to the invasion mostly coming in the next few weeks. Don’t get me wrong, it's a good speech, but when she said something about remembering what we’re fighting for. I figured it was a good time to write this as I watch to remember what I am fighting for. This way, should the worst happen, my words can be known to Equestria and my family should I fall.
First, I am fighting for them. My family. I am fighting so that they can live again in peace with my sister smiling in the sun without the fear of war or bloodshed. I fight for them so that we can be a united family again without the bitterness of the hated humans tearing us apart.
Second, I am fighting for Thundershot and the future I want with him. I want us to get married and have a good long life while raising our own children together. I was us to find a place to settle, a nice and quiet place to recover from the war while giving our children the future they deserve.
Third, I am fighting for Equestria. It’s the greatest nation ever made. Once three tribes of ponies hated each other but came together with friendship to bring the magic of friendship to all three races. We become the most powerful, wisest, and greatest civilization that has shown that we cannot be defeated. Time and time again our way of life was threatened and we will win this time again. We will not let the humans defeat us.
Fourth, I am fighting for justice. Justice for all the ponies who have suffered or died at the hands of these humans. These creatures who know nothing but war, death, and greed. I both piety and hate them, but I know we will defeat them. We’re the good guys. We’re fighting for peace and justice. They will face judgment for their crimes.
And finally, I am fighting for myself. Now more than ever is the time I show that I am a true patriot of Equestria. It matters not if the Alicorns are gods or not. It matters not that I will live or die in these coming days. I am going to go out there and fight for the fallen, for the innocent, for the virtuous, and for the future.
Bring it Humanity! We’re ready!
-Corporal Halberd Wings, 139th Arial Spear Regiment, 2nd Platoon
This doesn’t bode well, from what we learned in Useless the Wonderbolts were wiped out in the opening moments of the attack. So my question now is how will he react to Equestria’s finest being blown to bloody chunks? The other question is will they bother attempting to capture the city? Or just shell it into oblivion before landing? Why waste potential lives with capturing it, most arm chair generals are aware that urban warfare is a slaughter house.
Finally, I hope we get a little more lore about the rifles as I’m curious if there even select fire, or something simpler for mass production purposes, considering their limited industry.
Shame about that General. A bit surprising that there's still some with enough logical sense to see that Celestia IS responsible for the state of their country.
Can't wait to see how these cute little playthings the ponies have made fare against real weapons. You know, assuming their effective combat range is actually close enough to see them.
10248255
I'm guessing they will at least attempt to capture the city, if they didn't want the city, and didn't want the land Equestria has, they would just nuke the country to oblivion and be done with it. But since they're mounting an actual invasion they probably want what Equestria has to offer.
I don’t really think any more buildup is needed. The invasion is coming, we know it and so do the ponies. The deep breath has been taken and now it’s time for the final plunge.
10248299
Nuking is kinda overkill though isn't it? The use of WMD's against the Crystal Empire was a response to another in that location. From what can be gathered, Humanity is at this point in a comfortable enough position that they don't need to resort to that.
10248299
I do not think the humans will use nukes, even at this stage it'd be taboo as fuck. Besides, the humans don't really need to capture it. Urban combat is almost always delegated to very, very important cities. Look at the eastern front. Germans just went around cities and encircled, then starved them. Hell, the siege of Leningrad lasted for ages, because the Germans knew it wasn't very important. This city is just one, and the humans can afford to take their time. Destroy any resistance close-by resistance from afar, establish a beachhead and then surround. The ponies are even less suited for a siege than the WW2 cities were. Modern warfare is more based upon bottle up forces and act as distractions. Cities have no inherent worth unless they do.
Although, it depends entirely upon which nation is attacking. If its China and they really want it? Fucking hell, that city won't even stand by the end of it. We're most likely talking about both shore and air bombardment, then when the beachhead has been secured, heavy artillery. The Chinese might even be persuaded to use heavy ballistic missiles, of which they have a lot of.
My guess is that they'll establish a beachhead then expand outwards, circumventing cities and encircling them. Destroy any resistance they encounter in open field, then just gently scrape the cities down to nothing. Seeing how desperate Equestria seems to be getting, I'm betting they are getting low on ponies just trying to hold the coasts. Any attempt to break out of those sieges, which can be today held with minimal manpower, would result in a lot of dead ponies. If there is anything that humans have learnt, it is that cities are absolute deathtraps that negate any form of numerical, technological or support advantage.
Although, I doubt that Canterlot will be spared such. I don't remember what happened to it in the original stories, but I'd say that's the "Berlin" of this war.
No you aren't. You will never be ready for the storm Humanity is about to unleash.
I had a cheeky idea that I wanna share but you obviously don’t have to do.
Halberd dies in the invasion and a human soldier picks up his journal and writes his/her own entries from where Halberd left off. At first he/she was like Halberd where they hated the ponies and Equestria with a passion. But they start to get a new perspective on the war when they read Halberd’s journal. Possibly having sympathetic thoughts, obviously they wouldn’t defect but it would definitely spin their view on its head.
die
pity
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
10248334
The Crystal Empire got nuked thou that was a response to the Equestrian version of nuking two holy cities of ours, so the use of nukes isn’t exactly out of the equation, thou it most likely won’t happen as the Equstains lost their “nukes”.
One thing I don’t understand in all of this is why the Equestrians think they can win this? When humanity basically has fuck us all button on hand, similarly how WW3 can’t happen not directly between super powers anyhow, there simply is no endgame if either side is forced into a corner they will simply unleash an all out nuclear bombarded.
Same here the moment Equestria pushes humanity into a corner or lose all hopes of winning/surviving what’s stopping them from fucking up the Eqeustrians and the whole world? the barrier? there’s no mention of it being a physical wall just a poisonous field for humans plus the Crystal Empire got nuked, so obviously Equestrians have no anti nuke measures.
So I dunno what the plan to win was here if there even was one, at this point I think this war is a mercy from the humans as it is a waste of human lives where they could've just nuked Equestria into oblivion given what we know it is a separate island not connected to any continent.
10248317
Nuking being overkill depends entirely on what the humans want. If they want to keep human casualties to an absolute minimum, and don't care about pony casualties, then the best thing they can do is nuke. Of course they won't do that because many ponies have defected over to the humans, and annihilating their homeland will certainly make them question their allegiances once again.
The US could have mounted a land invasion of Japan during WW2 and probably win, but just because they could doesn't mean they wanted to. A land invasion of Japan would have resulted in a truly staggering number of deaths for both sides.
10248334
I'll be honest I didn't consider a siege, that would certainly be effective and keep human casualties to a minimum, though it would take a long time. It also recently occurred to me that many ponies defected over to the humans, and so nuking their homeland to oblivion will probably make them rethink their choices. Losing such important help would be a devastating blow.
But in an alternate world where the humans had no regard for pony life, and wanted to keep human casualties to a minimum, nukes would be the way to go.
so war for quite a long while but no human activity on equestria for some month, well it a D-Day 2.0 written all over
I’m wondering now, how’s the food situation for the average civilian pony? I mean they guard seems relatively well fed, but it’s hinted the economy back home is crumbling from the cost of the war effort. Even if they have grain stores can most ponys afford it anymore? If business are closing that hints wages are falling and unemployment is likely rising like a rocket. Or have they entered the hyper inflation stage were a bit is worth more as scrap then an actual currency. Either way, I’m worried that some foals might be going to bed hungry.
"Tell me, my little pony... How many species have you destroyed lately, without even know it?
You must force yourself to be warriors.
We must force ourselves to not be death."

10248317
In this case it's a first strike scenario. Despite the time humanity was gracefully given by Discord, they cannot capture the superweapon in time nor get any more time before it was operational. There's only one response to destroy a WMD without any spare time and that's with another. It was either that, or risk losing a major city.
10248298
Like watching a british mark one try an fight an abrams would be sad if the ponies didn't deserve it
10248525
I wonder if the fact the ponies can eat grass, flowers and the like will be a very short term prop up in that area

Humanity is such a destructive force, we may even have our own geological era named after us.
Heh. Halberd Wings's speech reminds me of ArchWarhammer's videos on the Siege of Vraaks. Specifically the 7-day long artillery strike on the enemy's 2nd defensive line. The ENTIRE 2nd defensive line. The enemy saw the activity of the Death Krops setting things up, and watched, and watched and waited. months passed but the Korps never engaged. Eventually the enemy grew complacent waiting, some even thinking the Death Korps was pulling out of the war. Then all the sudden it rained artillery for an entire week. The Vraaksian 2nd defensive line just disappeared.
Dang, if only them ponies had actual fucking airplanes. What are they going to actually do those ships? They'll just shut the hatches and leave claymores
I wonder if it is going to be a full fledged invasion or a trick. Instead of landing where he thinks they will, humanity hits farther down the coast.
10248694
Don't tell me, I am a geologist XD
I guess that general tried to pull a Valkyrie on Celestia and history repeated itself. Oh well, guess we have to do it the old fashion way now. With brute force and massive firepower.
10248928
Do you agree that the Anthropocene should be a thing?
10248934
It's pretty hard to tell this now. In geology, an epoch is based about "series", rock layers, and they are about ten milions of years. Yes, there are possibile new deposits in lakes, rivers, deltas, etc... but it still very blurry.
However, human impact on Earth's geology and ecosystems is a real thing, totally.
P.s. sorry for the OT and the bad english

Like I said, sieges are generally ignored in modern warfare. Cities aren't important, resources are. That's why you see cities entirely circumvented in modern grand strategy. The only cities that are actually *really* assaulted are politically important. Obviously, humans don't despise ponies at all. Look at Lyra. They love her. Nukes would be used only in the LAST resort. In this story, even the Chinese never used nukes, even though they were fighting on their own home front.
No, a modern army would just encircle the city and hold it that way, keeping breakouts at bay and then move on. Troops stationed in a city are troops that wouldn't be used in open battle. That's how modern doctrine looks at cities, at least. A city defended is a thing that just ties down forces. Only politically or resource-important cities get special treatment, aka Berlin.
And yes, in this alternate world you speak of, MAD would apply. They would've just destroyed Equestria before they even had a chance to speak. Modern nuclear weapons are more devastating than you think. We're talking about bombs several hundred times stronger than the ones dropped on Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Read up on Titan 2 and you get what I mean.
10248413
It is true, but again, you need to remember that even the craziest humans in charge of nuclear weapons have NEVER pushed that button. Even people like Kim Yong Il, who was fucking mad never did. There is simply too much to loose. They most likely only nuked the crystal empire in retaliation, which is justified in most peoples eyes.
In the case of why Equestria still is fighting, think about how Germany fought at the end of WW2. They fought with the volkssturm, which were basically just civillians. They even fought over the ruins of Berlin, where the war was lost. It's based upon propaganda and ideological insanity. This is what I think the author is trying to show, the descent from propaganda to how the world actually is, and not what the princesses has claimed.
Like you said, there is no endgame. But in this case, humanity is not forced into a corner. They can take their time. They can plan exactly how they want the war to go at this point. They've crossed the "danube", as it were. Equestria is foolish to think they can fight back at this point, but they are kept going by ideological fervor, and they will pay the price for it.
Is humanity still using the Geneva convention or not using due by the celestia and her ponies trying to get humanity converted or kill.
God damnit i am starting to get really tired of the ponies whom have their heads so up the fucking asses that lump in their neck is their god damn nose. They really are so blind to the fact they've killed or enslaved much more humans and might i add started the war?
Very good touch with the journal and the auto-writing spell. This means that we don't have to wait for our fine soldier to get a peaceful moment to write, which would most likely happen AFTER the invasion. That is, assuming that he survives it.
10249792
Don't forget the fact they essentially signed the death warrant of every living creature on their original home planet. Leaving everyone behind to face their impending doom, when they decided to come to humanity home planet. Since there is no one to move the sun and the moon.
10249278
Geneva Convention only applies to humans. non-human species is fair game.
10251266
So that means using biological and chemical weapons on them. Especially with nerve gas as well. Not to mention the equestria forces not knowing about the chemical weapons being used them in their defenses. Imagine their reactions to the chemical warfare on them, silent but deadly.
10251285
That's right. Since the Equestrians didn't hesitate to use their own brand of biological and chemical weapons. I.E. [The Conversion Potion]. Humans can play the same game in return and do it ten fold. Humanity had created a lot of deadly bio weapons over the course of our dark history, the like of which none of these foolish ponies could comprehend.
Bacillus Anthracis (Anthrax)
Variola Major (Smallpox)
Ebola Virus.
Marburg Virus.
Just to name a few...
Equestria has failed! Why don't you finish the job, and make the Equestrians extinct? Rid the universe of your filth! Why don't you just die?
10253399
No, I have no problems with it. I'm straight myself. In the Negotiations Series, Rarity was married to a male guard but he died in the war. Spike is straight and falls in love with a human female named Rebecca at the final story "Future". Twilight once dated Flash Sentry but they broke up because he disagreed with what they were doing to the humans and he later married Lyra Heartstrings. I also mentioned how Button Mash wanted to confess to Sweetie Belle in his story but he died before he could.
One would think with the ponies' repeated use of the conversion potion, there would be a lot of pressure by UN forces to use chemical weaponry in return. Nuclear weaponry may be considered taboo (and the "eye for an eye" scenario was resolved by the annihilation of the Crystal Empire), but there would be many ways chemical weaponry would be admissible on the battlefield.
For instance, white phosphorous, named Willy Pete by the military, is generally used as a "smoke screen" by American forces, despite the fact that it can literally roast a person alive in seconds, and it's extremely painful - though if you've ever seen/played Spec Ops: the Line, you already knew what it can do.
Biological weaponry would probably be avoided; while some may push for it, it would be regarded as incredibly risky, since UN troops would be marching on contaminated territories. Chemical weapons can be at least semi-contained in areas, though there's always going to be issues with blowback and wind factors.
One more thing disturbs me. According to given numbers, Humanity lost 3 billion people, or about 50% of its numbers. Ponies lost 40%. The former would indicate the total human population in 2036 was about 6 billion people, which is a pleasant surprise given we expect the population by then to be 10 billion - maybe birth control and population control methods worked? Still, the loss of half of humanity is a chilling prospect. China is going to need a long time to recover, India's a ghost nation, SE Asia is lost, Australia and New Zealand are empty of humans, Africa's been greatly depopulated, etc... Other nations have definitely suffered, but those would be the worst hit by the barrier and the invasion. I suspect the "survivor armies" will have the same self-control problems the Soviets did in 1945.
By contrast, the ponies lost more population than the Soviets did proportionately in WW2. The USSR lost 19-20 million out of about 150 million or so. Freaking Germany lost about 4-5 million soldiers and about 1-2 million civilians (and that's just the dead) out of an estimated 79 million people (1939 numbers). Equestria is going to be full of holes when this is over.
Damn, the way Halberd talks about all the other species with disdain. Makes you wonder about what kind of Propaganda he’s been reading. Also, the way he talks about changelings, you’d think the Reformation never happened. Maybe it didn’t, because I don’t see Starlight being mentioned in any way, in any of the stories. Or Trixie. Or Thorax. Did the transport of worlds happen before the Reformation got a chance to?
10274483
The reformation never happened. Starlight was captured instead of escaping during her opening episodes and committed suicide in prison. Thorax and the rest of the changelings are dead. Trixie joined the Rebellion on Lyra's side but died in the war.
