Obsidian (with apologies to the Bangles)
All the volcanoes in the world
Have lava hiding out, don't you know
If it builds up (oh whey oh)
They’ll all erupt like a magic show
When the lava cools on the ground
Different rocks are the result
Pumice and Quartz (oh whey oh)
Scoria and Basalt
All of these, they just want to be…
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Glass like Obsidian
Extrusive Igneous rocks
They all start out about the same
How hot they are (oh whey oh)
And how fast they cool can change their grain
Obsidian cools so fast
No crystals form, so it can
Be smooth and dark (oh whey oh)
Just like Glass, Obsidian
All the rocks with their crystal spots, say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Glass like Obsidian

Granite (with apologies to Toad the Wet Sprocket)
One part of me knows the word is overused
One part wants simplicity
And if I am confused, I am confused
But in my textbook
You offer definitions
I will not take these things for granite
It’s true granite is a rock with grains that show
With a hardness more than marble
But that doesn’t mean, schist’s the same thing
Igneous it’s not,
It’s metamorphic
I'm noticing
Gabbro is much darker
Basalt is fine-grained
Diorite has less quartz
I will not take these things for granite
Anymore
Granite is intrusive and igneous
I must be accepting
That only a petrologist
Can really know
Which rocks are granite
I'm noticing
Rhyolite is fine-grained,
But lighter than Basalt
Pegamatite has really,
Really large crystals
Gneiss has pretty bands
And it’s metamorphic
And foliated…
I will not take these things for granite
