    A dead PC...

    ...creates troubles for everyone.

So guys, my PC died. I'm fairly certain it's the motherboard (given everything else works when tested individually), and thankfully it's still within warranty (just shy of two months) so I'm hoping I can get it replaced. Goddamn asus.

    Summary that never was

Hey guys, so a single update today, still struggling with getting to work on writing.

I hate it when things like this happen, but all I can do atm is keep trying to jumpstart the creativity.

    Sorry guys

I apologize for the lack of updates. Although I am writing a bit, I've found myself in a bit of a semi-writer's block. I'll get out of it, but it is delaying the stories.

What you expect from writers you follow · 3:12am Feb 13th, 2012

So, I'm wondering... how would you react when a writer you're following writes something completely out of their comfort zone? (And therefore the reason you're following them.)

Lets say you follow a writer that writes the most amazing Comedy fics and then produces a really sad story?

Or a Romance writer that suddenly writes a Grimdark/Gore piece?

Or me writing a mind-control/psychological clopfic taking place in FoE? (Probably the most credible of the three scenarios, I would guess?)

Would you be disappointed? Fascinated? Give it a try? Shake your head in disgust and turn away/ignore it?

is it just me or is this a blank post?:facehoof:

out of the comfort zone? wheres this story!:flutterrage:

I'd give anything a try that is written by a writer I'm following. I'm following them because I like their quality of stories.

I agree with the guy above me

If we like a story, we track the story and read it

If we like the author, we watch them and read anything they put because we know the quality of their work hasn't changed

Well I think it's both a good experience for the writer and the reader. The writer gets to try their hand at something different and (maybe) develop their writing skills more and learn more about how they write. Readers get to see the author try something new and offer what they think on it.
That said I'm not touching a clopfic with a 20 foot pole, I don't care if Lauren Faust wrote it I still wouldn't :fluttershbad:

I generally follow people because they're good at writing, not because they write in a specific genre. But either way, worst case scenario I just wouldn't read it.

I'd probably read it anyway...
I agree with the others saying we tracked the author because of their quality

Came here to add something, turns out I was beat to the chase... about five times at least.

I'd give it a shot. If I didn't like it, I'd mention it. But I would always give it a shot.

I follow every author who has written a story I enjoyed.
I do not necessarily read every story by an author I follow.
I do not judge a story by it's author nor do I judge an author by their story.
I read what I want to based on my personal preferences.

For instance, I've never read word one of The Empty Room.:trixieshiftright:

to me it doesn't matter if the writer explores different genres from what he/she is best known for/is famous for. if it's something that doesn't click to me i just stop following that story, and wait for that writer to continue to other stories i enjoy from them...

however, i very least expect them to finish any continuing stories while doing the new stuff... :rainbowdetermined2:

I agree with all of those who've already responded.

If you have a story of such a question in mind, do post it! i know that I've seen more than a few cases of where published authors vary their genre and style of writing depending upon their whim at that time.

I would be thrilled :) Please do!

To be honest, I read the title of the story and the description, if it looks interesting I read the first chapter, and only after that THEN I read the name of the author. That is just me of course, but that means I don't care if an author writes something very different to its usual. cause I wouldn't even realise it till after I read it :derpytongue2:. Just write whatever you want, if I like it I'll keep reading it.

I don't follow the FO:E universe though soooo... I doubt I'd read that. :twilightblush:

I would give it a try, and try to offer as much feedback as I feel its needed. Always considering that that what it is important for the writer its what it matters.

I say give it a try. You never know, you might find something else you are good at.

i tend to look at stories on an individual basis watch those with high quality work. id take a look and judge for myself.

I know this will sound weird to say, but I don't really 'expect' anything from authors I follow beyond them writing. If they write something that looks interesting to me, I'll read it; if they write something that doesn't looking interesting to me, I'll either ignore it or maybe give it a try depending on my mood.

Give it a try im alwaaays up for something new

FO:E is an awesome setting and very well-written.

you are also an amazing writer

i will read it. why would i not?

and i would probably like it.

If you want to write it, write it.

I might well read it unless it is something that does not interest me, when I probably won't. It's pretty much as simple as that!

DF

I'd give it a try unless it's completely out of the scope of my interests, which is something liek 1 out of 100 stories. I've got a wide area of interest. Post and I'll give it a read. Also, reiterating an above post, if you want to write it, then write it.

well, here goes. I'd take interest in how an artist "from" one genre goes to another and writes up a story from their unique perspective. luckily for me, I'm... "accepting" of the several types of fics out there. so long as they are, well, actual stories, not vents for things.

I don't expect my favorite authors to really do anything :twilightsheepish: It's their choice if they want to write something that takes place outside of their normal abilities, it's also a good practice to be good at writing many things if you are an author.

Really, the stories and the ideas for them are the author's and the author's alone. So i think that they should do what they want to.

crap, ignore the two extra comments i left. I didn't mean for that :facehoof:

13435 I love and agree that last line

If a writer leaves his comfort zone does not matter to me, if the story is good. Like I would read a random 1 shot about Spike dancing the Irish jig if you wrote it, if it were interesting enough since I'm familiar with your writing style and expect certain themes and/or standards.

If "Frank", sorry all Franks out there, wrote a similiar premise I wouldn't read it since it really doesn't appeal to me, nor do I have any knowledge of his writing style/ability.

If someone can create a personal emotional attachment in a romance story and writes a action fic, as long as he can keep the same quality I see no reason they cant write anything

I tend to give almost everything a shot - I say "almost" because I really, really don't like gory and/or grimdark stuff; I'm not saying it can't be well written, it's just not what I enjoy. And once I find an author who writes stuff I enjoy, it doesn't matter all that much what he/she comes up with next, as long as it keeps to the same quality standard.

That said, most if not all writers are better at some things than others. Just as an example, I don't go into a story by SleeplessBrony expecting a light, fluffy, G-rated adventure piece of ultimately no emotional consequence, and I don't think he'd be at his best writing something like that. Writers have comfort zones for a reason - if you don't feel right writing it, chances are I won't be feeling right reading it. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, obviously, otherwise how would they ever know where they're at their best/worst? Though to be fair, authors aren't always the best at judging that. Agatha Christie hated "The Mystery of the Blue Train" and regarded "Crooked House" as one of her best books, and I happen to disagree on both counts. And yes, I just mentioned the most successful writer in the English language apart from Shakespeare in a debate about fanfics. I'm kind of strange. :pinkiecrazy:

:pinkiehappy: Cool! Thanks for your replies, everypony! It's awesome to see that y'all would be willing to at least take a look (unless its something that you definitely don't read, genre-wise, but that is completely understandable.) I am actually working on the story I mentioned I might do, although I haven't decided the level of cloppiness yet... might be explicit, might not. It's a one-shot and I'm working on it on the downtime so it's not going to be posted too soon, but yeah... :raritystarry:

I read most kinds of fics, so I wouldn't care.
Then again, I don't follow anyone so... :pinkiecrazy:
