Friendship is Card Games: The Enchanted Library · 10:50am Mar 22nd, 2020

This week, we’re branching out a little, to a library under a tree and the story that the RCL very scientifically determined was the best story on the site. Spoilers ahead for TEL and the early bits of TEK.

Momentary Petrification 1W
Instant
Until end of turn, target creature loses all abilities and becomes an enchantment. (It’s no longer a creature.)
The combined power of every alicorn in existence was barely enough to trap Discord for a few minutes.

Skeptical Guards 1W
Creature — Unicorn Soldier
Historic spells cost 1 more to cast. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)
“All the crazies come out around Seeking Day. Princess Denza doesn’t have time to deal with them, so we make sure she doesn’t have to.”
2/2

Curse of Obligation 3W
Enchantment — Aura Curse
Enchant player
At the beginning of enchanted player’s upkeep, that player sacrifices target nonland permanent they control unless they pay its mana cost. (Mana cost includes color.)
Celestia kept Discord contained, and thus could do nothing else.

Teleportation Practice 1U
Enchantment
2U: Exile target creature you control. You may return that card to the battlefield. If you don’t, return it to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step.
Twilight: It’s simple!
Rarity: For whom, precisely?

Curse of Futility 1UU
Enchantment — Aura Curse
Enchant player
Whenever enchanted player casts a spell, counter that spell unless that player pays 1.
Cadence asked the nation to help her find the other princesses, and thus doomed them all to failure.

Twilight’s Courier 1UU
Creature — Bird
Flying
Whenever Twilight’s Courier enters the battlefield or attacks, you may draw a card. If you do, discard a card.
For as long as Ponyville could remember, owls came from the Everfree with empty inkwells in tow.
2/1

Cadence’s Stand-In 3U
Creature — Shapeshifter
You may have Cadence’s Stand-In enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature, except it isn’t legendary if that creature is legendary.
Phantasmal as the other alicorns, Cadence uses changelings to assure ponies that her dynasty lives on.
0/0

Luna’s Visitation 1BB
Sorcery
Choose one —
• Target player discards two cards. You gain 2 life.
• Target player draws two cards and loses 2 life.
Luna’s power is constrained in her prison, and she has grown rusty when dealing with adult minds.

Mysterious Book-Bringer 2B
Creature — Unicorn Rogue
At the beginning of your upkeep, each player may pay 2 life. Each player who does draws a card. Then if a player has 10 or less life, you may exile Mysterious Book-Bringer, then return him to the battlefield transformed under his owner’s control.
“Return her heirlooms and break the spell.”
2/2
Discord, the Grudge Bearer
(B) Legendary Planeswalker — Discord
+1: Any number of target players each draws a card and loses 1 life.
-2: Destroy target creature. You gain 3 life.
-7: Target player discards all cards from their hand, then loses that much life.
4

Curse of Guilt 3B
Enchantment — Aura Curse
Enchant player
At the beginning of enchanted player’s upkeep, that player exiles a card from their graveyard. If they do, Curse of Guilt deals X damage to them, where X is the exiled card’s converted mana cost.
Twilight tried to keep Spike safe, and thus trapped herself.

Destructive Analysis R
Sorcery
Destroy target artifact.
Jump-start (You may cast this card from your graveyard by discarding a card in addition to paying its other costs. Then exile this card.)
Twilight loved new technology. It didn’t love her back.

Scramble the Shelves 1R
Sorcery
Scramble the Shelves deals 3 damage to target player. That player shuffles their library.
Whenever an opponent searches their library, return Scramble the Shelves from your graveyard to your hand.

Curse of Inadequacy 1RR
Enchantment — Aura Curse
Enchant player
Whenever a creature enchanted player controls attacks, Curse of Inadequacy deals 1 damage to that creature.
Luna believed she couldn’t escape alone, and thus guaranteed it.

Shelf Slam 3R
Instant
Shelf Slam deals damage to any target equal to the number of cards in your hand.
Twilight made quite the first impression on Rarity.

Usurpation Theory 3RR
Sorcery
You may cast this spell as though it had flash if it targets a legendary creature. It can’t be countered if it targets two legendary creatures.
Target creature fights another target creature.
Professor Awe’s hypothesis was eminently logical. Completely wrong, but eminently logical.

Curse of Disbelief 2G
Enchantment – Aura Curse
Enchant player
Whenever enchanted player casts a noncreature spell, creatures they don’t control get +1/+1 until end of turn.
Discord wanted an extra dollop of agony, and thus made Hollow Shades despise the very idea of Luna’s existence.

Marker Claw 2G
Artifact — Equipment
When Marker Claw enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 green Elemental Wolf creature token, then attach Marker Claw to it.
Equipped creature gets +1/+0 and has forestwalk. (It can’t be blocked if defending player controls a Forest.)

T: Add C. If you control four or more creatures, also add one mana of any color.
“Useless things. I wasted far too much time on them.”
—Twilight Sparkle

Heartlink Pendants 3
Artifact — Equipment
Equipped creature gets +2/+2. As long as it’s paired with another creature, that creature also gets +2/+2.
Equip 2
No matter how far you go, they’re just a thought away.

Twilight’s Tome 4
Artifact
Indestructible
3, T: Draw a card.
Dozens lie scattered across Equestria, as untouched by time as their mistress.

Rarity, Driven Questant WU
Legendary Creature — Unicorn Citizen
Soulbond (You may pair this creature with another unpaired creature when either enters the battlefield. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)
Whenever you cast a spell that targets only Rarity, if Rarity is paired with another creature and that spell could target that creature, copy that spell. The copy targets the other creature.
2/2

Vestige of Discord BR
Creature — Shade
Menace
2BR: Exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card. Vestige of Discord gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is that card’s converted mana cost.
Traces of chaos magic soon develop an awareness of their own, along with their sire’s malice.
1/1

Mark-Shredder Timberwolf BGU
Creature — Elemental Wolf
Wither (This creature deals combat damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters.)
Each non-Elemental creature your opponents control with a -1/-1 counter on it loses all abilities.
The cutie mark’s magic is still there, but the scar leaves a heavy toll on the pony’s mind.
3/3

Twilight, the Library’s Ghost 1WU
Legendary Creature — Spirit Wizard
Alicorn (This card is also a Pony Pegasus Unicorn.)
Soulbond
Prevent all damage that would be dealt to and dealt by Twilight.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if Twilight is paired with a creature, draw a card and put a hope counter on that creature. Then if there are three or more hope counters on it, remove all of them and transform Twilight.
0/4
Twilight Liberated
(WU) Legendary Creature — Wizard Noble
Alicorn; soulbond; flying
Twilight Liberated’s power is equal to the number of cards in your hand or the number of creatures you control, whichever is greater.
As long as Twilight is paired with another creature, both creatures have first strike and vigilance.
*/4

Pinkie, Luna’s Advocate 2RW
Legendary Creature — Pony Citizen
Spells you cast that target Pinkie, Luna’s Advocate cost 1 less to cast.
Permanents you control attached to Pinkie have indestructible.
A childlike innocence stronger than steel.
3/2

Celestia’s Wards 2GU
Enchantment
When Celestia’s Wards enters the battlefield, shuffle your graveyard into your library, then draw a card.
Spells and abilities your opponents control can’t put cards from your library into your graveyard or into exile.
Once Celestia protected something, it stayed protected.

Seeking Day 3WB
Sorcery
Exile target creature card from a graveyard. Create a white Noble creature token with alicorn, flying, power equal to the exiled card’s power, and toughness equal to that card’s toughness.
Equestria’s greatest tragedy has become a holiday like any other.

Spike, the Seeker 3URW
Legendary Creature — Dragon

T: Add C.
4, T: Create a 2/2 colorless Shapeshifter creature token with changeling.
Without Chrysalis’s influence, the changelings were happy to offer their service to the Princess of Love.

I'm a bit confused on the targetting on Curse of Obligation.
Scramble the Shelves is probably my favorite in the batch.

5225709
You control the Curse, so you choose the target. Then they make the choice.

Should Rarity, Driven Questant only allow copying spells that only target Rarity, or perhaps that target Rarity and not the paired creature? If I'm reading it right, this currently allows doubling the effect of a spell on the paired creature if the original cast targeted both it and Rarity.

5225714
Good call. I'd be okay with this, but some rules headaches crop up with certain spells. Adjustment made.

Protection From Editors Alert: While dialogue flavor text exists, it isn't written in script format. (Not bolded because flavor text being improperly formatted isn't nearly as much of a problem)

Stupid Complicated Game Alert: Mark-Shredder Timberwolf's ability only works while it's still on the battlefield to apply it. Logically, at least some of the mental toll is lifted by knowing that whatever did it to you is gone. Oh, and the "non-Elemental" clause is probably to prevent the case where two players each control one with a -1/-1 counter on it. It's still possible, and the rules are capable of handling it, but please don't.

I, personally, don't think Enchanted Library is the best fic on the site, but I can see why it won the poll. It's still very good. Unlike Magic's story of late.

Ran out of comics already? Told you should've branched out to the chapter books earlier.

The use of curse and soulbond is pretty clever here.

aaaaah ;-; these are really good!!! it was really interesting to read the different cards and their applications from the story, and the flavor texts were fun to read

I think Heartlink Pendant is my favorite because I have a very soft spot for the necklaces and ALSO BECAUSE OF THE PM YOU SENT ME AAAAAAA

5225741
There are a few examples of script-format flavor text, though not many.

5225751
Now, now, let's be fair.

Magic would have to have a story of late for it to be not very good. :ajbemused:

5225778
No, I still have about a month of material left. I just asked Mono if I could do this in October and it was getting embarrassingly overdue.

5225822
Soulbond's always been my go-to mechanical representation of romance. The fact that you're literally pairing creatures helps.

5226306
Wonderful to hear you liked them. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

5227499
Did you ever make these cards physical in appearance, with for example card smith?

I work with a friend to make one mock-up a week, which I then post to Derpibooru. This week's was Heartlink Pendants. This link should show you all of the FiCG mock-ups I've uploaded.
