You know those times when you're reading this wonderful story, you're enjoying yourself and having a good time, and then it introduces some story element that just makes you want to.....well do this; pretty much sums it up huh?
First off, I would like to point out this is a list of what I find really retracts from the story if not done well. If you disagree with any of this.....tough luck I guess. Though if you do want to engage in some discussion I'm all for it.
Alright, this is how I'm going to do this. I'm going to do a blog per peeve, somewhat due to the fact that means each peeve will receive fair attention from me. Mostly due to me being lazy though. I'm going to explain my reasoning and hopefully I'll at least make you consider these things a bit more than you've already have.
Enough of such matters though, on to the first peeve! Which is..........
The wingboner!
Now, I know this is pretty much a concept accepted by the whole fandom but I don't have anything against the idea itself, I just don't like it when people take the boner part too far.
Like I said, the idea itself that pegasi wings flare out when they are aroused is something I don't have a problem with. It actually makes sense to me, wings are a very important to any species that use them to fly and by showing them off they can inform potential partners that they are the prime example of the pegasi race. This instinct would then be included in courtship rituals, once again showing off.
However, for this idea to work the mechanics of it have to have limits. Basically meaning that this;
is unrealistic, as well as slightly disturbing.
The idea that the wings grow stiff and prevent the pegasus from using them is unreasonable. If it were true than there would be a lot less pegasi in Equistria. The reason? That can be demonstrated in this little example.
Tom, a young pegasus colt who just entered puberty was flying along one fine spring day, just minding his own business when he saw a mare flying ahead of him. Quickly adverting his eyes, Tom desperately repeated the warnings of his parents in his mind over and over. But alas, his rampant teen hormones would not be ignored and snuck a glance at dat plot.
Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Splat!
Yeah, and before you say no one would that be stupid, shut up and remember this is teenagers we're talking about here. Though this would explain the apparent lack of pegasus stallions for the most parts.....
So while yes, I quite like the idea of the wingboner being a thing, we need to remember the boner part is really for the name only, at least according to me.
