Did I say that I'd be updating Super Smash Bros: Disharmony today?
Obviously I meant that I would jump on an honestly-not-particularly-clever bandwagon and write a 1700 word story in about an hour and a half this morning and post that instead!
I don't even know why I jumped on this bandwagon. I'm usually not one for bandwagon jumping in the first place, and really, I don't particularly find the whole "peaches" meme that's going around FiMFiction all that funny or clever in the first place.
And, in fact, I actually kinda dislike it.
All I know is that last night, at about 11, I saw some story by Sunchaser about Twilight eating a peach, ascending to a higher plane, turning into a pony shaped peach (I think? She cried tears of juice I think) and meeting Princess Peach and changing her name to Stella or something. I was weirded the hell out by it, and attempted to figure out just what in the high holy hell was going on, eventually finding several more fics about Twilight eating peaches.
I suppose what made me actually come up with this fic was my general dislike of most of those fics in the first place.
None of the stories had any real sense of decent narrative cohesion, which is something that I value highly when I read stories. Really, more than anything, it felt like they were trying to get people to say "what the hell?"
Which is fine, I guess. If that's the emotional response you want people to get from your story, then go for it. More power to you.
But that's not the kind of story for me personally. Confusion is an emotion I don't like to get from my stories. I don't particularly like it when I finish a story, long or short, and my only response can be "what the hell did I just read?"
So I guess that was my reasoning for making it. My response to the previous peach stories made me want to write a story with more straightforward narrative cohesion, and more identifiable comedy short of just confused chuckles.
Furthermore, my questionable views on the meme in the first place I guess was what inspired me to use Spike as the 'main character' and to make Twilight traumatized by peaches rather than making her love them more than life itself. I guess this is my way of paddling against the current... even though I'm still sorta flowing downstream with it.
Which isn't to say I'm particularly PROUD of this story. It's good for maybe a few chuckles, but it's short, it's rough, and it's nothing particularly special. I'm much more proud of my other stories than this one.
Actually, come to think of it, I think my favorite part of this story is the bit with Peachy Pie and Carrot Top. I really like the idea of Peachy Pie being her little cousin, and I think they resemble each other enough for that to be a thing. And I also really like the idea of Carrot Top being a slightly less morally straight version of Applejack, using underhanded, emotionally manipulative tactics to sell her wares, and passing along her tricks to her younger brethren.
I think that bit's going into headcanon.
Anyway, there's one little bit left of the next chapter of Smash Bros: Disharmony that I still need to edit. I didn't manage to fix it today, so hopefully I'll get that done tomorrow. THEN it shall be posted.
I'm sorry that you only managed to get this poor excuse for a story today, folks. I promise I won't do anything like this again.
...probably...
...most likely...
...
...maybe...
An explanation of sorts for the peaches: Obsolescence used the hypothetical story Twilight Sparkle Eats a Peach in this blog. When someone made it less hypothetical, this blog followed.
As for why it went memetic, who can say? Presumably the same reason as with Twilight Scepter.
