So, we had the 'magic' miniseries and also the movies and now we have shorts. So, what is the purpose of the shorts?
OK, so there were talks of an 'Equestria Academy' series but that was scrapped. It was unfortunate since Friendship is Magic could use a spinoff in the form of a cartoon series for Equestria Girls. But these shorts still help to expand on the Human World and the analogs of the Mane 6. I mean, we learn a lot more from the shorts about the girls' background (like AJ's and Rainbow's part-time jobs). Rainbow in a sporting goods store, kinda expected. AJ working in a juice bar at the mall's food court. Now that was unexpected. Also, her uniform. Pretty cute.
Makes me wonder what the other girls do as part-time work. Rarity works in a boutique, but Pinkie? A sweet shop? Maybe.
I wonder what Sunset does to make money. I mean she has a house, she lives alone, so how does she pay the bills? Some say she exchanged currency from Equestria for money, but perhaps there's more to it than that.
What do you guys think?

An Equestria Girls YouTube series was announced for 2018 not too long ago. We don't have any information on it other than it's happening and that it was announced during and investor presentation.

Probably. The only thing announced so far is that it will happen, we have no details on it, not even which studio or episode length. Since Equestria Girls was apparently originally created to compete with Monster High, it wouldn't be unlikely for it to have a similar format.
