A young man is fatally hit by a truck before his time and is visited by a presence that offers him a new life elsewhere. He chooses Equestria (as you do), asks for special powers (as you do), gets them, and exercises his right to use them. It's tough for him, you know, being the most powerful being next to the gods themselves when they won't just roll over and give him what he wants. He can overpower Princess Celestia AND Luna at the same time, of COURSE he has to be in charge!

Will he learn the value of restraint? Probably not, but this other guy's got a solution.

Then she spots a spider. And spiders need to die. By any means necessary.

In the jungle, even sleep is not a refuge from the horror of war. A radio operator tries to find something to hold onto while surrounded by nightmares, both real and imagined, and the line between the two is all too often blurred. One day, he knows, he'll go home and try to move on. Until then, he keeps the radio on.

CONTENT WARNING: This story contains potential triggers for veterans suffering from PTSD. It is based on the recollections of a dozen veterans I've spoken to over the years, in particular several Vietnam War veterans. The content is disturbing, but necessary to paint an accurate picture of one facet of war. Link to veteran helpline here.

This story is not intended to be a commentary on the Vietnam War. Rather, it is about a soldier finding something to cling to when surrounded by madness. This describes perhaps a majority of the men who served in that war: good people caught in an impossible situation and just trying to survive and keep their comrades alive. Memoirs of My War is written as a tribute to all veterans, but, as this Veterans Day marks the hundredth anniversary of the end of World War One, it is dedicated to the remembrance of those brave souls in particular. This story is a companion story to another military tribute of mine, Flowers of the Forest, but neither are required reading for the other. A brief overview of the "War's Generation" AU (which is canon for both) is provided here for context, but is not required for either.

During the red invasion of Finland, a lightly equipped sniper is sent to the land of Equestria by unknown means and is hunted down by the locals. He does the first thing that he was told to do if he was separated from the army, head east and regroup with the 61st Infantry Regiment.

This story is a sequel to Gordon Freeman's Side Trip To Equestria

What promised to be just another day filled with royal duties, politics and politicians, Princess Celestia instead find herself trapped by an unknown, briefcase carrying individual who sends her away to keep her from interfering with Gordon Freeman's story as he journeys across Equestria to find his trusted crowbar.

Of course, this story is not about Gordon Freeman, but Princess Celestia, and she's no longer in Equestria... except at the beginning of chapter one where she is sitting on her throne, waiting for this thing to get started while thinking about cake... Oh, right. Spoilers.

But taken away by this unknown and powerful being, Celestia now finds herself in a strange facility, with a stranger device, and an even stranger disembodied voice desperately trying to kill her. And during all of this, there is only one pressing matter on her mind, besides of finding a way back home: Is the cake truly a lie?

She's determined to find out.
