One year after her return from her one thousand years long banishment to the Moon, Princess Luna takes some of her time to have a moment of reflection over the events that happened that day and in the year that followed it, thinking about what could have happened had things gone differently.

Also serves as Luna's entry in the "Nightmare" series of independent stories about the redemption of each of the alicorn Princesses (see Friendmaker and Daybreaker). Note: you do not need to read these before Nightwaker. But if you choose to circle back to them at some point, I won't mind!

Twilight and her friends made the journey, they found the magic maguffins that would save the world. All that was left was the defeat of the big bad, Nightmare Moon. They had this in the bag. There was no way this could possibly go wrong. Not in a million years.

One-shot.

During a quiet evening of stargazing, Princess Luna and a young Twilight observe the night with mutual contentment. A small flicker of light catches Twilight's attention, a strange anomaly in the sky. When she questions Princess Luna, Twilight is rewarded with a story — one both terrible and beautiful.

This story was written for Nightmare Moon 2017 Summer Contest.

Imprisonment on the moon.
That was the sentence charged against the weakened form of Nightmare Moon.

Years of solitude threatened her sanity, but there was hope. She could hear distant voices calling her a single night every year. Ponies finally appreciated her night!

Unfortunately, her greatest hope turned into her greatest torment.

For the first time in a long time, Luna realizes it's Hearth's Warming Eve. For the first time, she doesn't have Celestia there with her. For the first time, she's alone.

After 1000 years, Nightmare Moon has returned!

Now she shall plunge the world in everlasting night! Plant life grows wildly, animals prowl the woods, soldiers are better trained and equipped, everyone can speak freely, eldritch horrors are destroyed on the spot, the economy takes an unexpected boom, and Equestria becomes an even more diverse and friendly place to be.

...Maybe we were wrong about Nightmare Moon the whole time?

Dreams. In some ways they are the most delicate, ephemeral part of one's consciousness. In others, they are a direct path to the mind's deepest hidden desires, fears and doubts. Despite this, ponies are told from a young age that they are harmless. That dreams have no power over them. That they hold nothing that must be feared.

Nothing... save the nightmares that strive to prove them wrong.

This story is a sequel to Celestia

Villains rarely appear out of thin air. They start as most creatures do, but fall victim to fate, choice, manipulation... or love. Princess Luna's descent into the Nightmare is something that has been long forgotten by modern ponies, but Luna will always remember.
