After a weekend spent in Canterlot, Twilight Sparkle arrives home to find an odd scroll in her saddlebags. In the following days Twilight is plagued by terrifying nightmares, and horrific visions from a life not her own. Can Twilight Sparkle resist the Nightmare, or will she fall prey to the darkness?

Ponyville, by all means, has never been a town without incident. Somewhere within it, something was always going wrong somehow. However, for so many different things to go wrong so close together...it means things are more wrong than usual. And Twilight has more to do with it than even she realizes...

Some things are best left forgotten. The truth is not always sweet.

But, do not think things will be completely dark and grim! There will be plenty of strange things, and Pinkie Pie being Pinkie Pie! Because Equestria is not Equestria without its share of strange things.

The sequel to this story 'For Want of Eternal Nightmare' is out and can be accessed quickly via the link. Its a lot longer compared to this and has higher quality writing. It's worth the read, trust me.

I would certainly credit the original author of the story if I could remember their username. If they are out there somewhere, this is just to show how much I appreciated their amazing storytelling.

Part 1 of the Shadow Trilogy

As Twilight Sparkle enters her third year amongst her friends in Ponyville, she finds herself plagued with strange dreams of an unknown power whispering dark secrets to her. The voices speak of Power, of the strength to protect what she holds most dear, of the great knowledge she could attain, such that no force could ever threaten her lands, or her friends, ever again.

Though she shrinks from this voice, the lure of greater knowledge, of magical power far beyond what she currently knows is enticing and alluring to her, eating away at her resolve even as the lack of rest begins to wear her physical defenses down.
