Yeah, I agree with you there. Most attempts at Meta stories do end up being poorly written trollfics. There really isn't much you can do about that, aside from writing a serious Meta story yourself. I myself don't really see Meta fics in a good or bad light, as it honestly does depend on who's writing it.

341556 Yes, most of the time that is precisely the motivation and intent of the writer; but the definition of Meta stories differ from a trollfic in that a meta story is defined as stories that makes use of aspects regarding the fandom itself. This means that a META story doesn't necessarily have to be a trollfic; however the stereotype is that most META stories are trollfics to the point that the Mods had to consider banning them since while there is nothing wrong with a well written META story, many users frown upon trollfics.
Basically what I have yet to see is a story that is like one of those good old self insert fics; but without the self insert part.
Thinking back I guess you could count My little Dashie as a META story that satisfies all the criteria; if we assume that it's not a self insert.
(Not like there is anything wrong with self inserts either).
Actually after reflecting some more I was probably exaggerating there is most likely a lot of well written META stories out there; although the stereotype still stands in my opinion.

Isn't that sorta the point of Meta stories?

I mean, when you're writing about someone or something that actually exists, or perhaps even know personally, it gets kinda strange when you attempt to get into the Psyche of them and genuinely build a story around it. Of course, it depends on what or who you're actually writing about. That's why making it humorous is so much easier, because making fun of someone you know is a lot easier than looking at them in a serious light.

Well putting aside the natural impulse that comes from manipulating other individuals will trough the use of writing as if they where you puppets and my personal impression from my experience reading them.

I have yet to find a single META story that has a complex, serious,or significantly compelling storyline(They are appealing in other forms). Pretty much all of them are written for the lulz, most lack some of the most basic elements of a story plot. Including but not limiting to a conflict, character development, or a hero's journey cycle. I'm slightly themed to just keep ranting on and on and on...

However, still despite all that. I love them, I'm someone who likes to read trollfics, and I don't think there is anything wrong with writing or reading META or troll stories.
