Alright, just read it. Nice story, but it was a bit lacking in one or two spots. I think it could be fixed with a few changed words here and there, though, and overall this a great concept and story. they lack the knowledge to help learn how to close it, and the ones that do have magic don't have the necessary power to close it, so why bring them?
other than the need to have more characters.

It was clearly stated that they will be investigating. Sometimes the best investigators are average people (or ponies in this case) as professional investigators sometimes overthink things. Plus, some of them might be there to scare away timber wolves, though I feel that part is incorrect seeing as how both princesses are there.
