He gave Twilight the wrong spell and she really did kill her brother, and tricked her to killing Cadence on purpose. All to break her more easily. And besides, Twilight always had a choice. She could have always Teleported all 3 of them outside of the city. They are planing to take on Celestia and Luna. If they can take them on, is Shining Armor and Cadence really going to be much of a problem?

4323348 Because that is what evil does? Also note the two spells they do. Sombra says the fake one only looks like they are dead, and that it is painless. But Shining Armor died in pain, while when Sombra used it on Cadence, there was no pain. The real spell hit Shining, the fake one hit Cadence.

Plus why would he NOT break Twilight? If he goes soft on her, she can use that against him later and would not have the resolve to kill Celestia and Luna. If he breaks her, truly makes her believe he is right, she will always side with him and never turn on him or question his orders.

It's basic common sense Well, I guess not to people who are all so goody-goody and stuff. But for evil, it's very basics to take one of your enemies and break them to the dark side.
