Now this has really bothered me for a while... Do people just downvote stories about topics they don't like, or does fimfiction just happen to have the pickiest ballbusting fans in the world? Well, it's not quite as simple as that, unfortunately. This isn't ballbustingfiction.net, and it's safe to assume *most* visitors don't share that particular fetish. Some people will downvote a story without reading it, if its very existence in the New Stories box rubs them the wrong way, or if they click through because they like Character X and then find you're using them in a scenario they don't like or feel comfortable with.

If you're writing fetish stuff, especially niche or extreme fetish stuff, the chances of pissing off somepony who doesn't like that particular fetish grow exponentially. Ask the scat writers how their ratios almost invariably look, no matter how good their actual writing is.

*But*, I've always thought that even if you end up with a 1:3+ like/dislike ratio, well, there are still going to be readers out there who read your story and thought, "finally, someone who gets me!", maybe even readers for whom you're the only writer who ever managed to push their exact buttons, and you should be encouraged by the earned green votes, rather than discouraged by the inevitable red ones.
