The contest isn't specifically for romantic pairings; it broadly includes characters who generally haven't really interacted that much in canon or fanon. As it so happens, the Pinkie-and-Lyra duo falls into that latter category. It's not romantic, but it's still a team-up (or pairing) that isn't seen as often, so it counts.
