The world is unified. Peace has returned after a hard-won war threatened to turn the many races upon one another. Now unified with America at the core, things seem to be improving. Still, ask any human, it's just a matter of time until issues appear.

Be great if cell phone tech could quieten or even silence Sonar, but noone wants to use it if its free, cos the person who gets the piece of paper stopping anyone else using it unless they sell their body, mind soul and decendents, will?
Wonder how good ELF works for ocean sounding. You only need to know if its deep enough, or getting shallower for most uses?
I have suggestion, couldn't they replace in the future sonar with some sort of vibration thing. Like it sends out vibrations that bounce off things. Or a magical device that works like sonar but without the problems. Idk, just suggestions.
Here's some more I've found. https://whalesandsonar.weebly.com/sonaralternatives.html

Thermal, Magnetic, and Passive are all fine alternatives!
I'm surprised they're actually trying that argument. It may work in our world because whales can't complain, but when you have actual people (including humans, what with the human immigrants in Seaquestria) who can tell you that, yes, people have died and no, it's not safe, that kind of talk sounds like a recipe for disaster.

That’s what sound is, is vibration. You’d be replacing sonar... with sonar.
The question is, is there a frequency they can use safely that wouldn’t harm lifeforms? Or at least a lower power level that’s safer? Whales’ natural sonar can also be damaging, when you’re right up close, but doesn’t harm anything further away, and yet they manage to navigate fine.
Maybe we just need to work on the receiver technology a bit more, make it more sensitive so it works as well with lower power levels being transmitted.
I remember the sonar thing was talked about during that battle between the submarine and battleship, the submarine couldn't use its sonar so as not to hurt its seapony allies. Thou I guess it was never officially banned back then, so I guess it makes sense to do something now. Perhaps they can find a better alternative, with the help of magic maybe? Xd
Afaik that level of sonar that kills is only used by submarines during training and when they're engaged in battle. No reason to make a lot of noise if you want to stay hidden, which is the point of being a stealth attack vehicle.
We already had the issues of how combat is conducted with the last story claiming falsely that hunting rifles unable to penetrate armor yet an assault rifle with a weaker round somehow preformed better because of the rate of fire.
Take a bit from the story if there's inconsistencies.

You lost me entirely. A lot of ships use sonar. Many of them are not submarines. Submarines usually go to passive and other methods, it's true. This was never the argument? Active sonar distresses wildlife. This is a known fact. I did not invent this for this story.

I was pointing out only the lethal uses, which I thought was already stated it was halted. At the least the Navy would have updated their procedures in the years past to avoid it, but there isn't an explanation why it did not occur.

Because civilian ships use sonar, and military ships were avoiding using it near allies, but the allies just made it clear that 'near' is relative, and much farther away than the ships gave credit for. It's not good enough to avoid using it when you actively know a friendly is around.
That is the change.

Heheh
I dont really know how it works so I kinda just threw stuff out there. I know more about other things than Sonar tech.
