I think the train left the station late 'cause everypony was hugging and saying their goodbyes on the platform. It was kind of weird watching out the window as the train pulled out of the station, knowing that I wouldn't be back for a year. We can keep in touch, though; we're allowed to write back and forth.
I hope I remembered to pack everything I need. I don't know if I can get pony things on Earth, and it takes forever to mail things back and forth.
I met a couple of the other exchange girls on the train. It was true, what Chestnut had said—there weren't any other pegasuses.
One of the other girls said that we were going to be put up at a hotel for the night, 'cause we'd get into the city too late. Another girl said that there would be rooms at the exchange building. It turned out the first girl was right; we got to share rooms at the hotel. My roommate is named Aquamarine; she's an Earth Pony from Ponyville, which is a small farming town near Canterlot.
She's pretty nice. We're going to nearby schools, so maybe we'll get a chance to visit each other. Humans also have telephones which are like telegraphs but you can talk on them. I can't wait to try a real one out.

Given the level of tech development in Equestria, they definitely should have telegraphs, but we've seen little evidence of them. They don't seem to be in widespread use. My pet theory is that pegasi lobbied hard to suppress the technology, as it would have put too many flying "pony express" couriers out of work!

Fucking special interest groups. Blaaah!
6975818
I've always considered that they do. Wasn't there even an episode where somepony got a telegram? I think it was one of the Apples.
I've got my own headcanon on how it operates (not the same as ours), but the end result is basically the same.
I'm not sure that the pegasi 'lobbied,' it's possible that the idea of everypony getting along is so ingrained in ponies that they're reluctant to develop technology which will put ponies out of work. On top of that, the cutie marks probably put some brakes on inertia--until you've got ponies with telegraph cutie marks, you'd assume that a pony with a delivery cutie mark would be more reliable than a machine. And of course there wouldn't be any telegraph cutie marks if there aren't any telegraphs.
We've kind of seen show examples that go both ways, though. So maybe it's way more complex (or maybe it's something that the show creators don't think of).
It's probably way more complicated than that, but that's kind of my thoughts on their slow pace of technology.

What kind of monster could put such an adorable pegasus out of work?
"Pegasuses" is kind of a mental mouthful to say. "Pegasi", while redlined with spellcheck, is easier and known to be the/a plural. I'd change that, unless it's part of Silver's normal speech/thought patterns.
That's the only gripe I have so far.

It feels to me like what Silver Glow would say. I agree; it is a mouthful.
Yes. I also like to think they have telegraphs (well, canonically, they do), but not telephones.
6975818 That's exactly what I've always thought! That or the Pegasi couriers didn't need to lobby, Celestia doesn't want to see any cutie mark insanity-affected disgruntled postal workers.
6977159 I always figured Celestia runs the place a lot like a French mercantilist, with a free market but lots of government interventions to protect jobs and prevent layoffs.

Note the things on his desk.
Secondly, what gives you the impression that their pace of technology is "slow"? Because it's behind ours? What if the pony species has simply been around for less time?
6982225 It's probably less that pony species have been around less time, and FAR more likely that they just haven't NEEDED to. Ponies tend to be a less curious sort for one. Plus they already have their magic to give them innate advantages in their everyday world. Plus with things like Cutie Marks, it makes it so that not only are ponies less curious about things that do NOT revolve around their marks, it also means they do FAR less exploring with different jobs and fields. Most college students change their major AT LEAST ONCE, but NOBODY does that in Pony World, because they all KNOW from an earlier age what they are "SUPPOSED" to do.
Not to mention with their innate magic, they have a FAR better control over The Elements like Water & Earth & Plants than humans. 1 Earth Pony can grow food FAR better than a single human. They create bigger and better quality products, they have strength and stamina to last them better than what a normal human and horse can do. Etc.
Not only that, but what drives a lot of innovation? WAR. A lot of things came about due to wars. Our Cold War with the Russians gave us NASA, which produced all KINDS of goods that trickled down into the civilian fields. Ponies don't have that long history of strife, and even then there's been little technological innovation, instead relying more on magic and physical prowress.
Plus ponies and the other races in general, tend to be fairly isolated. That means there's not a great exchange of ideas and conflicts that could arise that would spur on more technological revolution. After all, how often do you even see ANYONE use Telegrams, despite being so prevailent in pony society?
Etc. Etc.

Ugh... Again this bull about cutie marks, destiny and all this silly ideas about them. Rarity main tallent are finding gems. And she suddenly! not a miner but fashionista. Muffins IIRC have seven bubbles on her mars and she a mailmare. So no, cutie mark NOT link you to single job for life. It's just show you strong point. So you pretty wrong on this "but NOBODY does that in Pony World"
Yeah, they so isolated that gryphons children learn to fly in same flight school as pegasi foals. And donkeys live in Ponyvile. And Iron Wills seminars have LOTS of ponies attending them. So much isolation.
Pegasi, not pegasuses.
7024077 Pony Slang?

Perhaps that was a poor word choice. "Lags behind ours, for whatever reason" might be a more accurate statement. However, I do think that they approach technology more deliberately than we do, which while it probably stifles innovation to a point, it also means that they may not have the spectacular product failures we've had, nor the discovery after the fact that something is actually bad for us or the environment.
7006209
I think that's a good point. Maybe 'needed' is too strong a word; maybe they don't want to, again for whatever reason. A lack of vision, a desire to keep things the same way because it works; who knows? In my opinion, there's no reason that they couldn't ultimately build everything we humans have.
7011437
It's one of the things in the show which is kind of vaguely defined, and as such there's lots of speculation. I think that a cutie mark kind of means what the pony wants it to mean.
7024077
She would have learned to pluralize words ending in s by adding -es.

The Great Alicorn Hunt tackles pony technology very well. It's been taken down from Fimfiction and is on Archive of Our Own due to harrassment, but he's brilliant on how he solves their lagging tech. Basically, there's specialized draconequeses besides Discord, and one of the was Malfunzio. He specialized in discording technology. He ran behind ponykind, disassembling anything more complex then a wheel, until he was eventually trapped by a smart inventor. In the story he breaks out in the middle of a Technology Convention (xD) and they have to trap him.

Huh, that's an interesting theory.
Myself, I think it's because magic can do some stuff that we never could, and also largely a desire to keep doing things the same way as they always have--I think in general they don't like change all that much. We know that they have the concept of mass production--the weather factory proves that--but they don't seem to have applied it to much else.
There's also a lot of tech that they'd probably never need to invent: for example, sailing ships are good unless you don't have wind, and if you have pegasi you can potentially always have wind.
Ah. So, it'll be january 1 to Dec 31 on Earth, hm? A full year journal...
Token Ponyville Hick!
7982993
Yup one full year.
There's got to be one, y'know.
Minor irritation of the misspelling of pegasi but sounds like it'll be an interesting story.
8463685
That's one thing that Silver Glow never changes--she always says "pegasuses."
8468871
Wikipedia says Pegasus is from Latin & , like several words ending in "us", the plural ends in "i". Spellcheck thinks neither pegasuses nor pegasi is right.
8722885
But, it's the proper name of one particular winged horse, not winged horses in general (at least in Latin); also, while I don't remember my Latin all that well, even if it was, it would depend on which declension it was. It could also be Pegasos (3rd declension, IIRC). Could also be Pegai (it comes from Greek).
From sources I've checked (mostly grammar nerds, yay!) potential plurals are:
Pegasi
Pegasuses
Pegai
Pegasoi
And there may be others.
And then she promptly becomes addicted to porn and social media
10110872
Well, I’m not gonna deny that that could happen to a pony, but Silver Glow is made of stronger stuff.
