The Storm King has attacked.
Canterlot has fallen.
The princesses have been captured.
There is no leadership.
There is no plan.
But there are Wonderbolts.
Wonderbolts do not give up.
Wonderbolts do not know the cost of war.
Perhaps it would have been better if Wonderbolts did give up.

Rainbow Dash is uncertain how she'll balance her life as the newly promoted Captain of the Wonderbolts. The former captain has a few words to say.

Assembled from the slush pile of my writer’s notebook (a.k.a. related Q&S contest entries rearranged like a metamorphic rock) for the 2024 Wonderbolts contest.

How can a pony move on after they lose everything?

How can they come to terms when faced with the reality that they may no longer be able to return to their old life?

Spitfire finds herself critically injured and hospitalized. How can the captain of the Wonderbolts — a pegasus proud to soar across the wide blue sky — deal with finding herself unquestionably grounded?

Spitfire: a curmudgeonly ex-Captain of the Wonderbolts ( normal flight division).

Vapor Trail: young, fresh-faced Ensign of the Wonderbolts (spaceflight division).

On a years-long, meandering supply run aboard The Wanderer to Equestria's outlying colonies, there's plenty of time for new discoveries, both mundane and never-before-seen alike.

There's also plenty of time for old wounds to fester.

But maybe, just maybe... there's also time enough to heal.

Pre-read (with all my thanks) by Pneu, RB, DarkCyan, Grey, and 6-D Pegasus.

On the last mission to save Equestria, Rainbow Dash was hurt. Not critically and she'll heal, but for now she's grounded. But she also promised that she'd do a Sonic Rainboom at the next Wonderbolts show for Scootaloo's parents, and she is not going to let her girl down.

Solution: get another Rainbow Dash.

There's just two problems.

First, Spitfire knows her team backwards and forwards and she's not fooled.

Second, the human Rainbow Dash doesn't actually know how to do a Rainboom as a pony.

I'm sure this won't cause any problems.

The Wonderbolt Filly Race has just finished with an outsanding preformance. The three placers stand high of the podium with their metals. The colt in first place seems to be lost in thought while he looks out to the crowd. Who is this colt and what is his identinty.

Surprise is a simple Cloudsdale mare. To make ends meet, she is hired by ponies to perform stunts for them at parties. Nothing grandiose, really -- a few spins, flips, and loop-de-loops work wonders on a frowning face.

But as she returns home one evening, she bumps into a mare who sees promise in her, a mare who grants her a once-in-a-lifetime chance doing something she had only barely thought of before.
