Hello, my name is Derpy Hooves, and this is my journal.

Chapters (6)
Comments ( 18 )

This is an interesting take; we don't often see "Derpy the blue-collar single mom.". Interested to see where this goes.

5265329 Yeah, but...
Look, say you have a plate set out with your favorite kind of muffin on it.
The muffins represent adorable blue collar loving single parent Ditzy Doo / Derpy Hooves / Bubble Butt stories.
You eat one of the muffins, and someone else comes in and sees that there's only one muffin on the plate.
Or... maybe two muffins. Yeah.
Ok, step one, put three of your favorite kind of muffin on a plate.
Now that you've got a plate full of muffins and you also have a Derpy Hooves fic, stop thinking about metaphors.
Eat some muffins. Read pony words.
That went off the rails, but I honestly like where it ended up.

I've seen it a few times before. Fortuntately, I needn't concern myself with being original. Even if the concept isn't anything new, it's going to be naturally different in execution. On the offchance that it is really close to the other stuff that's out there, that's alright too. People like what they already know so long as you can show it to them in an interesting way. That's just how writing works; originality is pointless to strive for because most people don't care about it, and it's going to happen on its own anyway no matter what I try for.

All I have to do is entertain.

Oh, I know, we get the idea of it in other stories, and it's presented as a story *element*, I guess what I was trying and failing to say at five AM was that the vibe is less cartoonish and more authentically a recognizable human archetype here than I am used to. Perhaps I just read the wrong stories? And yes, CDRW, there's nothing new under the sun, story-wise. It's all in the execution, and I'm interested in yours here.

5265666 What on earth were you doing up at five in the morning? That is way too much morning.

Thanks, I'm glad that you find my take on it authentic.

Up at 5 every morning. Dogs!

5265666 Of course Skywriter's barely-revised 5 am thoughts match my mulling-it-over-since-this-was-first-posted thoughts. It feels like you've brought Derpy just this side of "special", but not in the euphemistic mentally-handicapped sense: your "Bag O' Derpy Character Traits" is the same as everyone else's, but by putting them together with the right balance of single-mom-stress and goofiness, and letting her have a more realistically developed voice, she feels like a character and not a gag.

There is something incredibly human about this. Please write more.

I just got around to reading this and I've got to tell you.....it is wonderful! I really just love the way you're showing Derpy as being somepony other than clumsy or goofy. She is strong , independent, loving and caring. I really hope you continue on with this story. I like stories with real female characters. Thanks for writing Derpy as most of us feel she is.....just like us. Great work!

Grrr. Just for a moment I was like "hey, someone else who has to get up for work at this hellish hour!" and then it turns out to be dogs. That's a far nicer reason than work. I'm going to jealous at you. It's like raging, but, you know. Jealousy.
...
Okay there isn't a jealous emote, so I'm going to improvise with moustaches.

:moustache: :moustache: :moustache:

HAH! In your FACE!

(... I need sleep. I've been up since 5am.)

AAAH UPDATE

Last fic I started to read concerning Dinky's lack of father was one of SS&E's and good lord, did he trowel on the melodrama. Dinky looks up with big soulful eyes and asks "Mommy, why don't I have a daddy?" and Derpy's so stunned by the question she crashes into the ground and bursts into tears and apologises over and over and

I prefer this take. Also that the circumstances were so ordinary. No heroic cliché where he protects Derpy from a mugger and coughs out a last "I love you". Just an accident that could happen to anyone.

Maybe I'm jaded.

Eh, my commute is long enough that it'd be 5:30 or so even without the dogs. You may feel appropriate sympathy.

Three parentheticals in one sentence?! Derpy writes (and thinks) a lot like me. She should probably learn how to spell "Manehattan", though.

Remind me to write an entry about how I got my cutiemark someday.

Derpy, don't forget to write an entry about how you got your cutie mark!

I love your take on Derpy so much. She's just so much more fun than any other version of the character.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I love how real this feels.

$derpysday = array("oh","snap","son");

Happy to see more of this.

Its not often that a story will come back from the dead, glad this is story did.

It's stream-of-consciousness chatter, but it's very enjoyable stream-of-consciousness chatter. I did like the array being dissed.
