Sunshine Smiles enjoys the promise of a new day, the rosy reds of dawn, the moment when the new sun's light kisses Equestria.

Moonlight Raven prefers the thoughtful solitude of the night, the soft shadows of moonlight and the peaceful silence of a slumbering city.

Sometimes you have a long day at work and then take a bag full of tools home to fix the brakes on your Dodge Ram and discover that it won't start because the battery is dead and that is followed by discovering that the hood won't open 'cause the latch is sticky and it takes wedging a shovel into the grille to get it to open (I keep my shovel in my van now to make sure I always know where it is).

And when it gets running it turns out the alternator is seized 'cause it's sat for so long but once that's broken free everything is good. Get it in a good working position, it's not raining too much, the pry bar eventually gets the stuck caliper off, and after it's gravity bled it's time to pump up the brakes and test drive it.

Everything's good for the first ten feet, then the warning lights come on and the brake pedal's kinda squishy . . . oops, turns out that now the rear feed line's blown! Back where it runs between the fuel tank and the frame, 'cause why not there?

Is going from "always has brakes applied" to "never has brakes applied" an improvement? Jury's out on that.

Anyway, that was my day and I figured that the best way to send it off was with something cute and fluffy and probably relatable to everyone. Maybe you're a Sunshine Smiles, up at the crack of dawn to welcome in a new day. Or maybe you're a Moonlight Raven, enjoying the solitude of the night.

Maybe you can see the appeal in both.

Any time is best time when with the one you love. I learned that almost 40 years ago next month.

My mother was a night owl. Used to drive the rest of the family crazy doing housework at 2-3 AM.

I'm broad minded. You want to be cheerful in the morning? Go ahead & BE cheerful in the morning. You can live -as long as you don't insist that *I* be cheerful in the morning. :twilightangry2:

Huh?

She was still sleeping. She’d tucked a pillow into her forehooves and stuck her muzzle almost under the covers.
Sunshine didn’t understand it at all. Mornings were the best part of the day.

Celestia: "That mare understood!"

Moonlight had rolled over, still keeping the pillow between her forehooves. Away from the sun that spilled into their bedroom, away from the heat and light that it gave.

Luna: "That mare understood!"

it was also the kind of thing that they’d both grown to understand, that sometimes they had to embrace their differences and enjoy them.

Totally agree. And you don't have to do everything together or have all the same interests, either . . . some people don't know that.

I sort of do both. I think I'm more naturally a night owl, but I can also shift my sleep schedule to be a morning person, and they both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Oops, the word 'formerly' got lost somehow. Fixed, thank you!

Celestia + Luna: "Those mares understood!"

Yin and Yang, the perfect duality . . . both Tia and Luna, as well as Sunshine and Moonlight.

This was a cute fluffy story and very relatable as I'm very much like Sunshine and I'm married to someone like Moonlight. :raritywink:

Huh. You know, pretty much every time I've seen these two portrayed - not that there have been many - they've been sisters. Not that it's an issue portraying them otherwise, assuming there's nothing canonically confirming that I'm not remembering (and even if there is, it's fine as an alternative version), just gave it an odd feeling. Still, neat little sampling of these versions' lives.

They remind me of two certain pony princesses

Drinking coffee outside in the morning, when the birds are chirping and the sun is low really is one of the finer pleasures in life.

A cozy story with a good lesson about accepting differences that you and your partner might have. This was so soothing to read!

Thank you!

I think a lot of people are, and I think that the successful relationships are the ones that embrace those differences, rather than having the two partners try to conform.

It's interesting that you say that. There are few pairings that I find weird in romance stories 'cause I tend to see those characters (or have read those characters) as siblings even if there's no canon saying so. Also some ships I like and some that I don't . . . such is the life of a reader.

AFAIK there's no canon that they're siblings, but I'm not a hundred percent sure. I could totally see them as sisters. Especially since there's that famous photo of the sisters, the one with rainbow hair and the other one more gothy.

11887848
They do have a lot in common with them, that's for sure.

11888157
I'm waiting for it to warm up enough to enjoy drinking coffee outside again. I do like watching the sun rise, and I've been getting up early enough to enjoy it.

That's an important lesson that some people need to learn

The episode where they speak had a cut line where they called each other sisters.

Up to you how much that should count though.

11889146
First off, good work on the research there! I'd say that counts as official canon, and I think I should change the story accordingly.

Well, assuming that I remember to do so tomorrow or Thursday when I have time to actually do it . . . poke me if I don't

I don't know if there's any actual need to change what's been written.

At the very least I think you should keep the original version of this around somewhere for the people who prefer it as-is if you end up changing it to account for the whole sisters thing anyways. (I remember a decent amount of shippers being disappointed when they heard the episode's writer intended them to be sisters around when the relevant episode came out.)

Definitely a Moonlight Raven... Although I prefer to only go to bed once the sun has properly risen. The 2 worst times of day for me to stay awake are sunset and sunrise but I never want to miss out on the beauty of either.
