Twilight believed she was Princess Celestia's most faithful and only student – until the day that Sunset Shimmer stole her crown.

Surely, she thought, that that was the end of the students of whom Celestia had neglected to tell her.

But a package delivered to Twilight's door brings evidence that even Sunset wasn't the first, and worse still, that she wasn't the only Royal apprentice to mysteriously disappear!

For the first time in her life, Twilight is rocked by doubt regarding her mentor. Is the package a warning? Can Princess Celestia be trusted? Is Twilight the next apprentice destined to meet an untimely end?

Nopony has heard from Fluttershy for three months. Not Rainbow Dash, not Rarity, not even Pinkie Pie. Her friends have been tending to the cottage and her animals, keeping it clean and organized, but even with Twilight's constant magic scans and a semi-constant guard search Equestria-wide, no hint has been found of where she went, how she vanished, or why she didn't tell anyone. Some ponies even think, in their darkest nightmares, that she might be dead.

Then she shows up one day, very definitely not dead, but just as definitely not the same as she was.

And does she have a story to tell. Boy, does she ever...

There exists two Equestrias, Diurnal and Nocturnal, one ruled by Celestia and the other Nightmare Moon. Though they are intertwined, their cultures are worlds apart. Neither are allowed, by law, to see or interact with the other. Concordia, a cross-border agency, enforces this law with extreme prejudice. Break the law and face severe consequences.

Rarity, a private detective, has lived all her life in Diurnal Ponyville with this as a reality.

Ruby Becker, a human tourist, newly arrived in the city, has yet to experience the bizarre nature of the dual cities for herself.

Twilight Sparkle, a member of the Royal Inquisition, Nightmare Moon’s secret police, must work constantly with the knowledge that even she is not above Concordia.

All three soon get entangled in a conspiracy far stranger than this dual reality, one that involves the existence of the legendary Hippolyta, a third Equestria that lurks in the shadows between the ponies and the ponies.

(Inspired by China Mieville's novel, The City and the City).

It started with a Nightmare: a corrupted monarch, a desperate sister, and a fragmented kingdom left in their wake. Saddled with the burden of protecting Equestria alone, Celestia chose to be strong enough not to. Instead, she found another way: three mortal ponies, the most magically gifted of their generation, to stand by her side as defenders of the realm.

For a thousand years, they've been everything Equestria needed them to be. Scholars, guardians, warriors, heroes—or, as Celestia prefers to call them, Angels. And if their inaugural achievements are any indication, her latest nominees for that illustrious order might just be the best ones yet.

Provided, of course, they don't blow up half the kingdom proving it.
