After a long time--she would be more precise but Twilight has lost track of time--she emerges from the dark of the library. Her candles are burnt down to nubs. There is no food left in her pantry and furthermore, no coffee. So she goes to seek both.

And finds the town changed. Or is it Twilight who has changed?

I've been wearing a mask. For how long i'm not certain. Someday that mask will come off. Either i'll remove it willingly or it'll fall off at the worst moment. Until then i'll just write the letters which i'll never send.

Life goes by pretty fast. Sometimes we forget to stop and smell the roses. Sometimes we forget what's really important.

Not trees though. Trees never forget. It's a shame they don't have voices to remind us.

The time comes for all students to step out from under the shadow of their teacher and choose their own path.

On that path, knowledge is power, but if it all goes wrong... if that power is put into the wrong hooves... how far might somepony who is trying to reconcile the position of teacher with the duties of ruler be forced to go to fix these mistakes? What level of personal involvement in being responsible does she owe herself and her people?

...And how much is it going to hurt?

Bundle Joy beats the heat by relaxing in her bathtub for the entire day, but it's so easy for that to get boring. She entertains herself and her guest by telling some stories.

It's Darling Dam's Day, the day dedicated to celebrating the mothers of Equestria. Ponies would think any mare who's had foals would qualify, and be right in a way, but a surrogate like Bundle Joy usually feels a little out of place in the usual celebrations. Still, the next best thing is celebrating her mother, and that's just what she does.
